SHIMANO spinning reels

Does anyone out there have any idea how the Anti-reverse mechanism works on a Shimano Spinning reel... ? Stella reels don't have a ratchet locking mechanism, or an anti-reverse switch...

My Stella and the Spheros both have free spool in both directions.... :X

Can anyone help? Not interested in sending the reels away, I want to fix them myself.

The Stella has an anti reverse bearing ( super stopper on the FA and super stopper 2 on the FB ,I think )
There quick answer is that both your anti reverse bearings are maybe stuffed.

It's a STELLA 10000 FA

.Anti-reverse bearing? Super stopper? Can't find anything describing "anti-reverse" on the parts menu? Which part would that be?

Reefs - What the hell did you do to the thing??!?!?!? I've never heard of Stella's giving Anti-Reverse issues.... EVER!!!

The best bet is to join up on 360tuna.com, and check out the Stella rebuild tutrorials or get hold of those guys and ask.... but be warned mate, taking apart a Stella is not for the faint at heart.... I would NEVER ttempt to completely service any of mine ( i.e. total strip and rebuild ) not a chance.....

Let me know how you go, because theoretically, you should be covered under warranty by Shimano..... But, oh yes, I forgot we are in South Africa.... and our good friends at Rapala VMC do the Shimmy thing don't they? Well that means you've got as much chance at finding help as I do of waking up with straight hair!!!!

Let me know mate, an option could be shipping it it the US and getting it fixed for free, then shipping back...

Thanks Nepps...

What did I do to it? Nothing much... just threw it into the sea for half an hour....! ::S And then proceeded to nail about 20 saaiza Kingies on it... 'twas really tired after that... the bail arm washer kussed out and so did the anti-reverse mecahnism...

I did open it up myself when I got back, stripped it completely, cleaned everything out and serviced it... but cannot sort the anti-reverse story out... I know it's something really simple, but I'm just being doff... I need the obvious pointed out to me... it doesn't have anything to do with bearings - that I'm sure, because I serviced every bearing in the reel... problem is the schematics don't decribe any anti-reverse mechanism...

So kewl. I'll go to 360 and see what I can find there. Thanks for the help guys.

Hooked. I have yet to see a Hair straightener that will sort out Nepps' dreads!!!! HeYah Shaggy!!!!

Tony, good to see that even Nepps is shocked at the Stella battering! About the only time that you don't complain about gear failures is when you have caught as many buses as you did on the trip........

Ony hassle is getting it sorted out........

The guys at Angling Africa do great reel serices in their workshop (did the rebuild on my Calcutta 400) ony problem will be getting the spares out of RVMC.

I have to agree that getting shimmy spares is like pulling hen's teeth. I stuffed up my speedmaster on the reefs, probably because she spent most of the day under water, but after 2 weeks of phone calls and no luck, suburban tackle swopped the reel out (probably me calling everyday).

Nah, Poly... it's really not that bad... I did it, but I still can't find out why the anti-reverse isn't working...??? Driving me nuts! A bearing doesn't stop the reel from going backwards... a ratchet or a gear or a Pawl - something like that does... just can't find out where I'm going wrong?

My knowledge wrt this reel is admittedly non existent, but i had a similar problem with some reel or other, where pawl was in its rightful position but not engaging. And previously to that, when working under bad light conditions,Pawl was installed upside down, and once reinstalled correctly,it was A for Away.Cheers!

Thanks Walt... problem is with the Stella, that there is no description of "anti-reverse" pieces or mechanism. There is no pawl in the entire reel schematics. It has to be something to do with a gear engaging a stopper somewhere...

Did you look at the "other" schematic, is it different from the one you have?

Somewhere it will have a little pieletjie thingie(s) that will fit in to somewhere to make it turn only one way.  :hyst:

Hey Reefman

Did you strip the anti-reverse roller bearing itself? If so, then let me tell you I did the same thing and the anti-reverse wouldnt work! I tried everything, and evenyually gave up and almost started crying because I loved the reel. I eventually threw the reel away because I couldnt get the anti-reverse to work. The reel I am talking about was a shimano slade 2500. So from now on I dont touch the anti-reverse roller bearing on any of my reels.

Speak to BigMatt. He did the same thing as me with his Daiwa crossfire, but some how got it right. He is the guy to speak to if you stripped the anti-reverse bearing itself. He fixed his (he has more brains than me anyway) so he can help you out

If you didnt strip the anti-reverse bearing, then let me reassure you that my other grinders anti reverse dont work for a few seconds if I dunk them or turn the anti-reverse switch off and then back on again. But to fix this I play around with the reel and turn the handle, this somehow engages the anti-reverse again and presto, they work again! So maybe play with your reel a bit more

The anti-reverse Bearing is a one way roller bearing that is normally on the shaft of the pinion gear. On some of the bigger shimanos you can strip the little rollers and springs out of the housing. I have never worked on a Stella so I'm not sure about that. If you grease the roller bearing it will not always work it MUST be clean and lubricated with oil. The lever that operates engaging and disengaging the anti-reverse will usually just turn the "bearing" housing a little, make sure that this is happening. Try and find the bearing make sure the rollers have no grease on or under them, clean them with some turps and oil with a light oil.
I once service an ultegra and had the same problem you have because I greased the bearing.

The other schematic you sent me is of the Stella 1K, which has full anti-reverse cams an 'ol. I have the 10K. I found the 10k version of the schematics you sent, but it is from 2003 and earlier - the reel seems to have evolved into a different beast since then...????

Thanks for the input... but the Stella doesn't have an anti-reverse lever - there is no way of switching the anti-reverse off, as you can with other reels. I'll check out the bearing on the Drive shaft... but I somehow doubt that it's only a grease problem??
