Took mine to the best reel repair guy in Cape Town & asked him if I bought a piece Shi!? & he recons it is on of the best reels in it's catagory & he has hardly ever had one in for repairs... He also showed me some very expensive reels in his workshop With real silly defects & common weaknesses .
Don't pay more than R 1050.00
I sleep with mine under my pillow - she has a name & everything.

@Renier I'm relieved after reading your confession. I thought that it is only me ... sleeping with my Shimano reels and naming them...

hi seelan

see the  post shimano speedmaster upgrades i believe they are still the best reels ever made next to the newel reels(very simular materials); the new reels have a few weakpoints i therefore have passionately breathed new life into my standard ols school speedmasters 20-40 15-30 and mark 3 shimano reels and wont swop them even for a newer deemed better reels at all. thats how much confidence i have in them and with the mods i do they are better than the new reels i firmly believe. Thanx

I have Had mine for about 6 months & been out about 20 times - & always thoroughly clean take the whole reel & take it apart after beach sessions to get rid of any sand particle that might make its way in among the gears. only use gun oil (get it from any gunshop +-R40) ..
My Father always told me "look after your reel & she will give you many hours of pleasure"
Also always listen to your reel ,speak to her also, but listen - as she will be doing most of the talking.

They are like an AK47, you can drop them, kick them, abuse them and they still work.....the best value for money reel available in my opinion.

Hey misguide, you are genius!!!

I have been looking for such an accurate description and I think it goes for all Shimano's = Aftomat Kalashnikov 47 = Cheep, tough, reliable, no jams, magazine space - 30 rounds, round per minute speed...in automatic great, velocity. Light on maintenance.

Daiwa = M 16 = Overpriced, full of jams, velocity mmm..., not so good, maintenance capreeze, advertising campaign great.

Best reel ever made, I have had mine for over 15 years and used it for rock and surf , spinning for yellow tail, snoek and long fin. Its got 6:1 gear R. Its basically indestructable
As reels go, one of the best all round reels! Priced a new one at R750.00 here in CT a month ago and with the rand strenghting they should be getting cheaper!

As if the guys like Rapala VMC ever reduce prices?

I love my Speedmaster ... best investment I ever made was sending it to Old Salt for some "mods"; he takes a great reel and makes it better.

Go for it !! I have 2 Speedmasters. Wont swop them for anything. One reel was used on a daily basis for more than three years, never needed a service. These reels can withstand almost anything.

Shop around. Saw a Speedmaster for R699-00 bout month ago at a shop that sells odd's 'n ends - not a specialist tackle shop, must have been lying there for some time.
