Shad on Bucktail Jigs

hi gerhard,
i didnt try it today, actually lost my only white one in some rocks recently. the fish were in such a frenzy i think the would have chased anything.

After working the beach i settled on a rock bank from where i cast staight into the deeper water parallel to the beach. I used a fast retieve holding my finger so that the line catches it every time the spool turns. The jig was very close to the surface and the water was absolutely clear so it was fun actually seeing 8 - 10 shad attack the lures to see who was going to get there first, they were in an absolute frenzy. i asume it was right place at the right time. i also tried soft plastic baits as an experiment but the fish kept biting the tails off. Bucktail jigs are robust and i'll be buying a few more befor the sardines arrive (holding Thumbs)

One word of advice... If you buy plain white bucvktail jigs, you can use Sharpie/Permanent Marker pens to colour them in any coklour combo such as Sardine or Mackeral with a Blue pen, a Black Pen, A Red and maybe a Green one....

HI Gareth,
Here is a photo of some of the lures that i use. On the left i have 2 bucktail jigs. Top left is 1 oz, bottom left is 3/8 oz (this is the one i used) top right is a 1 oz Onde Onda and bottom right is a rapala ( i think about 11 g)
Retrieves that has worked for me was;
1. Holding finger close to bail arm that line hits it everytime it makes a turn. Causes eratic behaviour in lure. (This i use on Bucktail Jigs and soft plastic baits)
2. Jerking retrieve, using the rod jerk left then right keeping the tip low. (Any lure)
3. When using rapala it floats so a fast retrieve and letting it lie there for a while with a tug every now and again. The same with surface poppers.
