Setup advice needed

So a friend of mine is coming to visit this Dec and we will be heading to Witsand and surrounding areas.

He only knows about papgooi so has asked me to get a grinder setup for him.

I was thinking along the lines of a 12ft grinder setup which he should be able to do most types of fishing there except toothies as we are not going to target them.

Budget is R1500 but can stretch it a bit if needed for a rod, reel and braid.

Any suggestions?

On a serious note, I think you on the right track re a 12ft combined with a 4000 size reel, just think a good quality is going to be a bit more than your budget.

My suggestion would be to look at a 12ft loomis, probably the best value for money. They're about 600 -700 bucks and cast a 5oz. Then reel wise I'd look at something in the 5000-6000 size depending on brand. Maybe a penn fierce. You'd have to fork out a bit extra for the braid though.

I'm assuming this is for bait fishing not spinning?

whatever tackle you decide to get, have a look at ganis...they will almost certainly save you some bux...which might let you get something better

they have a walk in store in pretoria or something.

they are ultra cheap...recenly i got a sienna4000 and 20lb braid for around R450.

Agreed, the 12ft loomis is nice and is fairly stiff - maybe get a lighter version as he wont be used to throwing 5oz?
braid - gator braid
reel - if its for very occasional use - a cheap shimano grinder. 300m of 20/30lb braid is probably sufficient. Gator braid is thin and good in my and others opinions. Getting stuff from ganis will leave you with extra cash for a nicer reel.

Depends what you want to do with it. 12ft for mostly bait fishing but between a 10 and 11' for spinning.
