Sette Cama, Gabon

I finally made it to Sette Cama for a week of fishing with Tourette in one of the most unspoiled parts of the world I have ever seen. The trip out from Abuja was a long one, with 4 flights and a 1 hour boat ride over two days to finally make it to the "Sette Cama Aventure" camp, run by a French couple called Eric and Nadine.

Expectations ran high and when we landed in Gamba we bumped into two French anglers who were on their way out after a week in camp, so when they told us they'd landed 122 fish between the two of them in one week everyone quietly hoped for an epic week of angling.

The camp itself is pretty rustic, wooden cabins and a communal lodge with dining area and self service bar. There's a/c in the cabins, which is a big relief and hot showers, which is really refreshing when you get back in the nigh from a long day's fishing. Not everyone in camp was totally satisfied with the accommodation, but personally I had no issues, apart from the pillows that were terrible.

Best fishing time is at low tide, especially before and after sunset, which for us meant a morning session from 04:30 to around 10:00 and an evening session from 16:30 to 23:00. We'd jump on the boats, take a 25 minute ride to the river mouth and fish the mouth and surf on the dropping tide.

The standout of the trip for me was Mark Murray, Tourette head guide, photographer and all-round good guy, who really made the trip worthwhile. He's super professional in his approach, knows the place like his back pocket and takes superb photos. I absolutely recommend anyone looking for an awesome surf fishing experience to hook up with these guys, it was the trip of a lifetime.

Untouched beach, backed by dense rainforest where wildlife abound. It's not unusual to see buffalo, elephant and other game on the beach while you fish.

The boats are spacious and very stable, great casting platforms for fishing the estuary.

First fish of the trip, not the biggest kob ever, but what a handsome little fish.

Jacks made an appearance every day, but were not as abundant as usual, except for one day when one of the guest anglers landed around 20 in 30 casts, while everyone else stood watching. He managed to consistently hit a spot that no-one else could reach and it was on cast for cast, very cool to watch.

For some reason I struggled to get into the jacks and got my first, this little rat, only on day 4. Of all the species in Gabon longfin jack was the only one I didn't expect to have any hassles landing, but I was proven wrong...

Cubera snapper...walking this one back to the beach for a photo I took the wrong line and ended up swimming out of a deep channel with the fish still boxing hard...one of the trip's blooper highlights.

Bus cubera on popper...ended in heart ache as a huge zambi ate the fish right in front of us and I came close to getting spooled. Fortunately I got bitten off after a blistering run and got most of my line back.

Sadly a lot of trash washes up on the beach from the villages upstream. The boat drivers took a bit of creative interest in some of the trash and this doll's head evolved over the course of the week to look more and more eerie...

Best moment of the trip for me, I worked my backside off for a big jack and this crevalle, a new PB, obliged on day 5. Sadly this fish died after a very long fight in spite of my best efforts to revive it.

Next morning this long fin, an average fish for the area really, also played along and I finally got the jack monkey off my back.

As so often happens, once I got the first one, they came easy. Not a huge fish, but I like the photo.
