Servicing your reels

It seems again, its that time of year again where the so called one and only professionals come out the closet to market their trade.

There seems to be many posts regarding, "you get what you pay for"....cheap service....etc etc by other tradesmen.

I have to point out one post, where original reels are opened up and look like trash. Fair enough they do. It is mentioned that poor grease, workmanship etc etc...gets blamed. I for one, believe thats absolute rubbish. Those are good reels, good grease and great manufacturers. They just havent seen a service for many years if ever.

I want to point out, that no matter how professional you are, what service you do, your reels and grease will look exactly the same after a few years of no maintenance.

Its not the person doing the reels that are to blame. Its quite simple, its the owners of these reels fault the reels look the way it does. Simple.

So guys, please remember, in order to have your reels looking like new, you need to maintain them properly but regularly and you will prolong your reels life and extra costs to have them serviced by professionals.

I agree, the lord above can service your reels, if you soak them in saltwater on a regular basis and never as much as rinse them in freshwater and leave years between services nothing is going to save them from corrosion.

I look at it this way.

If you wash your car every now and then and keep it generally clean it will look good for a long time.
But now if you go bundu bashing every day and drive through sea water everyday and only clean it with its 15000km service i can guarantee that after the second or third service your car will start having rust everywhere and electronics will start to fail.

Same with your reels if you do touch up maintenance every now and then and keep your reels clean it might never need to be done by "professionals".
But if you never do anything and abuse your tackle eventually someone with a bit more knowledge will have to look at it and fix it.

Taking nothing away from the people that do this as they do proper jobs but I would like to see one of their serviced reels be taken dunked in the surf everyday for 3 weeks and then left closed in a reel bag for another 6 months and then open it up. I will put money on it that even their reels will look completely shot.

Yip. Well said. Just a wash and clean after fishing makes a huge difference and an open up every now and again.

Nothing more to it. Not to boost my own ego. In almost 30 years of fishing ive never had a single bearing seize. No handle corrode away. No corrosion inside and most of all its never gone to a professional. Just basic cleaning. 10 mins of your own time saves you a fortune in professional services.
