Can anyone point me in the right direction with perhaps a name to investigate a charter business operating with some very dodgy equipment and a clearly very dodgy skipper!

Not sure how to assist? But how about (without naming & shaming the charter)....meaning you explain what went wrong, safety gear not up to "scratch" etc... What I am getting at, first... state your case, and what you experienced on your trip, and what you think is not Kosher... NB: Don't name the person or outfit...

Serra Moz, I say name and shame the skipper and the charter. Every skipper knows the rules, just like all the drivers on our roads. All boats have to have all the equipment on board as stated by SAMSA and the skipper must comply with the rules and regulations. I wonder what the skipper and the charter owner would say if someone got hurt or killed on their boat. They would probably try and get away with it by saying they did not know better about the laws. Saying this reminds me of the idiot that was caught driving on the beach at Witsand the other day. Everyone knows by now that there are rules and regulations that have to be adhered to.

Sadly, SAMSA, like many "organisations" in SA (and possibly elsewhere) are not there to ensure safety or compliance... They are there to provide jobs for pals and collect fees. It's the responsible use of media and public outcry that get them off their fat asses and doing their jobs. They usually don't take well to a single member of the public requesting them to work.

This sounds like a very cynical take on the situation, but I'm afraid it's also a valid one.

If I were in the situation, I think I'd approach the operator themselves and point out the issues. If they give you the middle finger then use the media.

If you look at it, it was the media that exposed 99% of the rot in government, SOE's and dodgy private companies. They are certainly more effective than the "enforcers".

Iggnorence is no excuse for safety of crew or clients.
If you explain what went wrong we can make some conclusions ourselfs. No need to name and shame on a open forum.
Skippers need to make choices in the blink of an eye. And most of us have made a wrong choice some time or other even if it did not end badly. It might have been one of those times. So pls. State your case and then other fisherman can pm you to find out who the culprit is.

Nothing went wrong or happened to me. I never said that.  His vessels do not display the relevant seaworthy stickers and are what looks like to me NOT seaworthy. I merely want the business concerned to be checked up on. The skipper was high or something on a few occasions I saw over the holidays while in control of the craft. If he is legit then cool.Just want to prevent a cock up before it happens.

SAMSA is the body you would need to approach - although I very much doubt much would come of it.
Many of us raised concern over the Robben Island ferries - and they didn't do anything until the one turned into a semi submersible.

FWIW - I hope you do the same to a taxi on the road if you noticed it was potentially unroadworthy and the driver appeared to be under the influence? We need more people to protest the wrongs before we lose any remaining respect for the law entirely.

If thats the case. Report to the launch site ski boat club safety officer.
Will get way better response than from samsa.
Boat should be inspected on next launch and not be allowed to launch again untill up to scratch...
Thanks for clearing up.
