Scratching - 4 Species, 4 Casts

HIya Guys,

With the current weather and fishing conditions not producing much shark action I have started to enjoy my Eds fishing alot more again.

So with this in mind we made some plans for an early morning visit to Ruby's Hole with Dean (RASSPL) and DL. Dean was going to let us in on a top secret spot for a collecting sand praws in a hurry. Arriving at the location I would never believe the bounty! 3 prawns a pump and bob's your uncle we were done in no time at all.

Dean this spot will go to my grave...thanks for that bit of extra local knowledge!!

Now the plan was to at the wall for 5am with bait and all, however both Dean and I overslept and it was closer to 7am that we managed to get first lines out. Baited up with sand prawn I made my first cast straight into the honey pot and went on straight away with a fish!

It felt nice and heavy but did not kick up much fuss on my light tackle outfit. Only when the fish came in close did I realise I had hooked up on the line of another angler who had walked up the wall to make his cast and then made his way back down to the beach.

Bit of a let down when I pulled a half kilo Cape White Stump out the water. After all the weight I did expect something a little larger! LoL

Quickly rebaited with prawn and went straight into the same spot. Hardly touched base and I went tight after a good take. Bit more fight on this fish and it put up a little stink. I was expecting a Blue Fish, but when it came up I was VERY happy to see a ice little Poensie or Black Mussel Cracker!!

I was fishing my little 11ft custom, GrandWave 20, 50lb Braid mainline, 0.50 leader and hook snood and my favourite hook #9 Ryochi hook.

After a quick pic I rebaited again and put the bait into the same hole. Straight away the rod went down again and VAS!

Again I enjoyed a lekker scrap on the light setup and soon enough I landed my fav reef fish...a beautiful Zebra! DL was on the beach putting on a new rig so I made a charge down the wall for a quick pic and quick rebait.

Back in the same spot and AGAIN I got the pull straight away. After a very short scrap I had my fourth species, a small Black Tail landed.

The tide was dropping fast one day off the spring tide and the sun peeped out from behind the clouds. Dean called it and said that the fish would go off the bite...and boy oh boy they sure did!!

We stuck it out for a couple of hours, but I had to get back to open the Trophy Tackle Den for 9am. I left Dean and DL on the wall still fishing, but half way home the heavens opened and the rain chased the guys home. Well Dean off to some Bacon and Eggs and DL made a visit to the TTD for a quick re-stock!

All in all it was a great mini fishing session, but by far the best part of the day was my new sand prawn spot!! Thanks again Dean!!

DL....what TV channel did you watch TODAY?

Great stuff Trophy. Glad that you have "rediscovered" the joys of light tackle fishing :)

Always lekker to land different species at the same spot. Its like opening a lucky packet :)

Sounds Like good fun Brett. Where is this Ruby's hole more or less???

Hiya Ants,

That's a good question as each PE angler has a different take on the exact spot! LoL

To sum it up you fish on or between the three walls infront of SAMREC in Cape Recife Nature Reserve. Last week I fished of wall 2 and 1 and then today fished off wall 3.

You are fishing into holes is flat shale rock...much like the famous Flat Rocks spot in PE. There are number of spots all named between these walls and quite a few require some swimming to reach the spots. Bit like strand reefs in a way.

I have seen just about every fish species caught from this area. A few years back I saw a good 60kg+ Duckbill caught on a Cracker bait!!

How do you bait up with sandprawn?

Do you use foam as a base or just tie on a few with cotton?

Hiya camstaude,

No foam as the base, I simply thread the first prawn onto the hook from the tail, down the body and out the head. Then I place three or four prawns over the first and then 'cotton' the together.

I use the latex elastic rather than the lycra cotton. I use a VERY small hook compared to most chaps scratching. I have recently found the Ryochi range of hooks and where most guys use a 1/0 or 2/0 hook I have scaled down to a #9! Super strong range of hooks!

Hiya KS,

It once a Elbe 12ft and now a 10ft something. Its an EVIL little stick with plenty backbone. I have caught a good few Blue Rays and Diamonds on it and it takes the punch!

It throws a 3oz best, but does a 4oz ok...but you would not want to stick it hard with the 4oz.

The rod is a light as a feather and nice and slim line. Matched with the Grandwave 20 and braid its an awsome setup.
