Hi

I want to go fish from the side between 9 Nov and 17 Nov I need to gear up an get every thing in place from rod, reel, licence, traces, bait ideas and every thing that I will need can you pleas help me with ideas on what to get I'm new to saltwater fishing.

I'm looking at the Blue marlin truflex rod and then a grinder for a reel.

Regards Carel

Figure out a 3 turn centuari knot, nylon leader from .50-.80, power swivels, some hooks, sinkers for rocks and sand some hooks, nothing fancy in 2/0 to 5/0 and rod and reel? Then befriend someone to show you how to use it all?

Also practice your FG knot if going to be using braid, but for bait fishing, a loop made with a double figure 8, in the braid line, to a swivel also works for me and wil be a weak point to break there if you need to but will be plenty strong for a fight. I was a sceptic but a commercial mate showed me to use braid to swivel like this and it was stronger than biminis for me to make a loop in braid. Find out what will be around the time when you fish and if all else fails go catch some shad. Sardine, chokka, prawns, like most other places I guess will be a sure bet...Longer hook trace in cleaner fishing areas and cleaner water and short snoods for the rough stuff and also dirty water. Sinker lines always lighter than your mainline and hook line but strong enough to not cast off..Search these forums, volumes of information going a decade and a half back!

Welcome and good luck.

You need to decide if you want a "coffee Grinder" or "multiplier" set up.

With new modern Coffee grinders you can get the great results with some big fish, however I’m old school and love my Tourium range of reels.

Then you need the right rob, how big you are will impact the type of rod, as with a big rod with a high oz rating you need to make sure you can load the "tip" enough to get a good distance cast.

Then decide on the type of fish you want to target, if you looking to get into some edible "small species" then a scratching outfit will work fine. If you want to get into the bigger fish (edibles) then something like a Lomin and franklin shock wave is a great buy and very versatile.

Then shark fishing is a much more abusive on your tackle, I prefer the Assassin rods (heavy).

Reels again depending on the fishing Capacity, durability, cost etc etc.

Then I always load up .50 king fisher high abrasion top and some good braid backing. Hooks, traces etc all vary on the target species. Buy a little book called “Natal Coast Line Fishing” this will give you loads of simple info on where to fish, how and what to take with. Its also not expensive.

That’s just my input more here will have much better advise than me.

Tight lines.
