The myth of Angolan waters needs some more explanation. Fernando gave us a good insight along the time line already, so credits go to him for the intricate revelations.
Adding my 2c:
Concerning the resident species, it's merely pockets of fishery that have been spared by overfishing. In that light it's even more surprising, that in our current cold / dry season we manage to repeat fine fisheries within 25km from our 6 mn Metrolopis called Luanda.
Come away 40km and farther and you might just find your personal best and prolific fisheries... but you need Fernandos expertise to find the spots... and a very calm day!
Population dynamics show migratory tendencies prevailing, to exit the interior and settle in the economically more promising litoral counties, Luanda, Bengo, Kwanza Sul and Benguela Provinces mostly. What happens next? Well, even the most remote and inaccessible fisheries will come under fire...
Concerning the non-resident species, I refer to Marlin, Sails, Wahoo, Dorries and Tuna... the picture is bleeker than in the darlest days of Russian "vacuum cleaning". Longliners must have read our tag reports in 2007 forward... and came to prey on the rebounding billfish.
Those days are over! We see less and less billfish compared to the fine years 2007/8 and 2008/9.
The fleet of sports fishing craft has grown. Teams are up 25% p.a. participating in the National Championship Cycle. Techniques have been refined... all to no avails: We are down 35% t&r Marlin and down 50% Sails compared to the two previous seasons. 2009/10 was the saddest fishing in a whole long time. Add ontop that seemingly only the 700 plus pounders Marlin still are roaming... but all smaller fish including most males have been taken by the longliners...
... billfishing bad news, would I say.
