Sardine run help

Hi guys

I am looking to go down for the sardine run and have a few questions?
I am stuck in jhb so when they finally arrive I will only have a weekend to fish as I won't be able to take off work.
So firstly where are good "spots" for the sardine run that I will be able to drive from jhb just for the weekend.
What is good bait to use? Is sardines the best to target sharks with or will somethink like a mackrel be better?
Then lastly safety as I might be alone and fishing from beaches and rocks the whole time or should I rather convince one of my friends to tag along.

Another thing can I buy my license here in jhb? Or only down at the coast?

Any and all help will be appreciated
I would also love to meet up with some of you when I am down there

You can buy a fishing licence from any post office.
With regards to spots that would depend on where the sards are, obviously if they are in a certain area then try to fish that area. More baitfish = more fish feeding.
I don't personally fish for sharks but if they're feeding heavily on sardines during the time then it stands to reason that fresh sards would be the best bait to use in that instance.
Try following the Sardine Run thread and PM some of the local Sealiners to link up with.

HI TimJan,

Check out the link below. This will give you most of the info you need to folwo the action and plan your trip. You will also find the Sardine Hotline number on there. THis is update regularly during the Run as well as updates on East Coast Radio.

I have in the past audio streamed ECR, phoned the hotline and checked the thread, all while being stuck in the office.

Regarding safety, There are so many guys fishing that you will very seldom be alone, unless you are planning some night fishing.
