Santa Maria (Southern Mozambique)

Hi All,

Seen a few posts on fishing in the area but most posts are pretty old.

We will be at Santa Maria in September.

Any suggestions on what gear to take with us for Drop shot / lures / Rock and Surf fishing.

What can we expect?

onthou die areas sal dieselfde bly "strand klippe en poele"
tot n mate, poele kan kleiner word met sand of groter.
die hengel van die areas sal nie veel verander nie.
hoe die bevolkings groei was weet ek nie.

die dropshot hengel tegniek is n nuwe ding vir ons almal, al is dit nou al......amper n ou tegniek.

ek glo daar is angder wat sal kan help met raad daar

September is a nice time

Santa Maria is a very nice place if you are willing to walk a bit.
If you are going to stay at Bemugi's the mouth is a super dropshot place.
Any size paddle tails works well, (Greenish blue) (Shad/ Mackerel colors) don't forget the pink ones, white also works well
We have found on the turn of tide either way is good...
Rock and surf the normal Tjokka Sardine combo works well just south of the Mouth (Hells Gate) from the rocks
Peeled prawn is excellent bait
Nice spotted pompano (Wave Garrick) Stumpies and Kingies
You might get speckle bass but they are protected and must be returned

Can travel about 2+ Km over the dune to Ponta Abril with a very nice bay and excellent rock and surf angling or drop shot.
Small wave garrick on slide might put you onto a a nice GT

What gear would you suggest we look at for spinning / drop shot..

Currently I have a light spinning rig
- Daiwa Laguna 702 MFS
- Penn battle btl2000


This might be a bit light for some of the species in Moz ?


Looking at one of these Daiwa BG 4000 / 4500 / 5000
What Rod will you suggest to pair with this? Looking for something in the range of 9' 10' or 11'...(Shimano Exage 10ft has been suggested)

Nice place....

I use a Loomis Franklin 12 " shockwave and Shimano Spheros 9000 loaded with 48 lb Gator Braid 50 lb fluorocarbon leader.

That 4500 will be to heavy for me...


I'm pretty set on the 4000
