Safety in numbers

Hey guyz... On Saturday nyt,my buddy nd I decided 2 fish Macs, i personally have neva had a incident there but have heard a few...

We left 1am Sunday morn with fresh bloodworm and fresh fresh wonderworm,we saw the 2 steamers dat came out Friday nyt nd heard it was Macs(Dnt kno if dis is 100% acc)...

We came in by the resort side nd there were a few vans there so fished about 50meters from the last van as not 2 disturb there fishing nd the water was rolling nyc aswell and u guyz kno that confident feeling when u pull up nd the water is looking gud nd u've got fresh bait...

Anyway, lines in,I went with wondie nd me friend bloody... Bout 5mins my buddy gets a pickup with a short run...his grab was loose so he reels in casts same worm... I then get a pickup, heavy heavy headshakes sinker loose nd I reel in stil headshakes lyk crazy but fish comes off(maybe gallie or das),wondie is ravished from top so I decide 2 put on a trap hook but the head of the worm stil looks gud so I cast it in but as all of this was happening, vans were leaving 1 by 1...

The last van leaves nd we r forced 2 leave gud fishing grounds knowing the fish was there,it was very frustrating... We drive down 2wards the cones nd get a few vans fishing together, they as happy 2 see us as we r them(safety in number)plus water luks gud so bonus...

The guy next 2 me gets a massive pickup but goes off so now we happy, they HERE but not so happy he went off tho... But again vans start leaving 1 by 1... But our plan was 2 be at Macs sunrise,we r forced 2 move again so decide 2 drive bac 2 the resort where the action all started... Driving pass very nyc fishing spots which was very frustrating...

There was no1 at the resort so we r forced 2 leave 4 our safety... We couldn't really drive 2the mond or all around Macs looking 4 fishermen as my friends dad was in langebaan golf tournament wit his 4x4 so we had his bakkie jus with dif lock...

I was sooo angry driving away from Macs knowing we were on the fish,we were laughing nd crying at the same time lol, I mean wot angler drives away from the fish lmimp... My friend reckons that's fishing but its not if u lose a big fish, or catch nothing on a trip, etc. not driving away from the fish cause u at risk of being robbed, attacked, etc.

Yes having a gun does give u an advantage but at night the skelms got the element of surprise esp coz u mainly facing the ocean nd I'm guilty of staring into my rods eyes more than I do my wife's lol and jus being ready 4 when and if the moment strikes the fish I mean...

There r a few other ways u can protect urself against these guyz but 4 me it's 'Safety in numbers'

You know what, I know the feeling, as i do often and most times prefer to fish alone. However, i am glad that you brought this up again, i know its the hundreth time, but maybe if the cape guys want to have more of a fishing experience and not fearful, I suggest we start a group?? Maybe with the assistance of sealine we can arrange a group thread and anyone can post when they are fishing or planning to and everyone can join as a group if they want. this could be the best time to get volunteers in and start a group. what you think? perhaps admin could place it in the top section of the forum so that it does not dissapear..

Admin, can this be done , as you know there has been more than enough talk and worried fisherman in the western cape all sharing the same experience. it shouldnt be about what is being caught but more about who wants to get together for a gooi.

Wow Grootvis... I was thinking something in line of that... I didn't understand y the other guyz were packing up when the fish was there but I'm sure they got their reasons... I thought who could I fone 2 let them kno the fish is biting but thought every1 I knew wu fish would be sleeping... If there was a thread then we can let each other know who fishing where and wots happening... I'm relatively new here so didn't know it was brought up b4...

Yip, the fishing was good that morning. Bait being taken, rods bouncing, the odd run. We were in the right place at the right time. I guess if we had landed a fish it would be a different story right now.

But how frustrating having to depend on your fellow angler to stay just a little longer so that we can feel safe while fishing.

Yes it rained a lil which did have an effect on some of the guys out there but 15 min later it cleared up and the weather, water, moon, stars, baro, salinity...everything you can think of, was perfect(in my mind).

I agree, something has to be done about it. Yes the forum will help with fishing in numbers even though we know how secretive some anglers can be. I still feel that the bigger issue must be addressed with the authorities. If they can fine us R2000 for driving on the beach(which is only for our own safety), they should come up with a solution to make us feel confident to park our vehicles and be able to walk to a location and fish it.

Who knows, Joe could have walked away with a PB steamer that morning...what could have been hey

I have the exact same problem I can never fish in peace, always worried about my car standing alone in the dark parking area, this really kills my buzz as I cant seem to focus properly when having to worry. last night I went to a spot along the west coast, we were only two guys when we arrived at the location the okes were shooting a film there and we felt safe untill the sun went down and the production team left, it started getting creepy and really unsafe as if someone should come and rob and kill you no one will know where you are or where to find your body, this is not a beach people go take walks on or let the dogs run etc so the chances of someone actually finding your decomposed body are very slim.
I personally would always like to fish in a group of atleast 5 or more that way I will feel much safer. So if there is some kind of group arrangent that can be made to ensure our fellow anglers are safe I say we do it. heres hundreds of anglers on this site and im sure most of you fish in groups. comeon guys sharing is caring.

Why not start a thread and get admin to make it a sticky, for anglers to add there names on who will be available to fish together or in close proximity. Maybe update each week to see who's available when and where.

If I may suggest using a social media whats app type fishing group setup. yes you are restricted to only a certain amount of users but its easier to communicate than to log onto a website first. just a thought.

you would have to have the members of the groups numbers on your phone. you also need to download the whatsapp application to your smart or android phone and then create the fishing group by inviting all to join the group.

((goodp_

P.S. Would be also good to have a good guard dog with  (  Rottweiler or German Shepard) on night fishing - that eliminates  chance of surprise.
