rookie diary: Cannon Rocks & surrounds

We decided to go to Cannon Rocks for a few days and explore the fishing spots around that side...we fished Cannon Rocks but struggled with the heavy swells ( don't fish bite when there are big currents / waves etc??) ,fish just didn't seem to be biting although I did catch my first shark, even though it wasn't big, it's still my first shark...( i think it's a shy shark). My girlfriend caught a leopard catshark at Cannon as well. We also fished Kasouga Surf & Bushman's estuary without much luck, but it was awesome exploring the new fishing spots around Port Alfred & we will be back there soon.

Just to add to the report, we spent a night at gamtoos a few days prior to cannon rocks & i caught a 1.3 kg cob, other than that we just just caught barbel after barbel as we did the first time we were there... After our Cannon Rocks stay we headed to the old faithful Sundays and caught some small Cob & grunter in the estuary but again not much luck in the Sundays' surf.

I must be honest that I'm enjoying surf / rock fishing a lot more than estuary /river fishing at the moment, even though we love the camping & calmer type of fishing that the estuary /river has to offer, the thrill of the surf is unbeatable for me !! We will be spending a lot more time at Cape Recife and other surf / reef / rock spots from now on !! One thing I need to really get the hang of is reading & understanding the weather conditions and how they affect fishing, although my baiting and casting is improving I still haven't got a clue about weather / water conditions etc...

I'm in Port Alfred next weekend for another league, so I will post some results / pictures after that.

Tight lines !!

Lekka stuff man!congrats on those catches,I won't see you in plett somethings come up and I won't make it its anyway the last fixed venue for the year I think,so I might do some fishing sunday, the only thing that puts me off about PE weather is the wind but I know the good winds and the bad winds and how they affect the water, but you will soon get the hang of it.

......we are all trying to get the hang of this as well.
When it all looks good , the fish don`t bite !!
And in the most miserable weather , they go crazy.

Fish are like women - difficult to understand !!

Best advice - the more you fish , the `luckier ` you get.

awesome catches, do a bit of a search on sealine and red up on good spot with sandbanks ect, you will be learning loads in the next few month
Those barbels are great for smoking and it makes nice bait aswell if you fillet them.
Just be very careful, its baie eina when they do get you
If it does happen try and get the injured area in very hot water and keep it in there so the poisen can break up

thanks tuna, reading /researching up on the sandbanks makes sense when i look at it on the computer, but when i actually get to the sea its a different story. is it true that if u fillet the barbel and use it as bait, that barbel will leave it alone?

not sure about that
i know shad like shad so it might be the same with barbel
its very good bait for cob though

okay so i have since found out that the shy shark i caught is a pest / vermin, so it doesn't really count, sorry about that, but i did catch this sandshark at the comp in port alfred on Saturday.
