Roll a boat.

What does it mean to roll a boat, does it happen at sea or if one has an accident while towing (hence the roll bar to protect the engine?)

i imagine it happens when flipping in the surf. when you dump in the surf and the boat flips in the shallower water the roll bars stop the weight of the boat being held by the transom mounts in the sand?....

Yes that makes sense.

I assume this can happen when launching (if the surf is too rough), and when returning through the surf (if one tries to ride over a wave for instance).

Are you sure in that context?
If something rolls, it rolls like a ball.
But if someone says: The boat rolls a lot. He could be describing how a monohull for example rolls from side to side. Actually more like rocking or swaying from side to side. As a swell passes under the boat from port side, the boat will roll to it's starbard side.

Well an associate of mine said they rolled their boat, so I know they mean they had some sort of accident (they didn't clarify).

The guy is quite experienced with surf launches, etc but maybe they took a chance launching through rough conditions or something like that.

My boat rolls like crazy...but is is long and skinny and a monohull and made of unimported timber...but she still rolls backwards, frontways and sideways

i think maybe while towing the boat, the boat might have capsized (rolled). the driver might have been driving too fast and lost control of the trailer. just a thought. take care
