There are a lot of threads related to this topic but in short, buy the best you can afford!

A great start would be possibly a Loomis Sharkey, great performance for its price!

Some links to check..

Thunder,

what's your budget? For R1.1K you can get the standard Sharkey and for R1.5K you can get the HMG version. Really solid rods with good parts ... Pac Bay guides, Fuji reel seat as well as a nice tube to carry it in.

Check out this link ... http://www.rockhustler.co.za/products/Loomis-Sharkey-F2534-%252d49e.html.

I had 1 shipped to Pta last month and it worked like a dream.

The Pentagon Med HMG with Heavy tip would fit your requirements nicely. Only problem could be the price...

It all depends on what you want to spend.

I currently use a custom 400/6 for eds and non eds. This combo works great for me at this stage. The best is to go to the shops and feel the rods.

You at least need an 8oz sinker for sliding. So this should be one thing you must keep in mind when looking and purchasing a rod.

Look at what your budget is and then you go shop around. The Sharky is agreat rod but would be abit heavy for eds.

The disadvanatge you have is that you can get rod for non eds but then it could be a bit heavy for eds. Then it could go the other way aswell. Look atsomething like the Shimano 1468 or Posiedon Meduim Heavy HMG or any rod in that region.

@Jakes - which one did you take, the std or HMG? I'm not sure which 1 I should buy.

I took the HMG Mannie ... cool thing it comes standard with #16 Pac Bay guides so no upgrading needed. The only upgrades you may want to do is fitting a Trigger winch and a flip-up guide but it's not really neccesary IMO.

I'm just worried about the strength of the rod. Been told that HMG breaks easier if not handled correctly. What is "correctly"?

HMG in general is a bit more susceptible to knocks so you'd have to take care as with any graphite rod not to bash it around on the rocks. The reason more so with any HMG is that the one down side of making stronger blanks is that it is more brittle than Std graphite.

Jakes.

That is goog advice. HMG stands a much greater chance of breaking if not looked after properly. HMG does not like knocks. Normal graphite is sometimes a better option to HMG

How about some pics of the new stick

Jakes, have you had a chance to fish with it yet? If so, how did it feel?

@ Arno ... I'll post some pics over the weekend.

@ Mannie, Nope, I haven't had a chance to fish with it yet but have had the opportunity to practice cast with it and I can tell you I had no problem loading the rod properly with both an 8oz and 9oz.

I went to collect my Loomis Sharkey HMG at the post office this morning. Looks great. Will post pics as soon as I get something with it (hopefully this saturday). Also bought a Saltist 50 from Dingo yesterday to pair with my new rod, now the wait for that to come in the post (hopefully tomorrow).
