Rod for big eds?

I'm looking at investing in my dream big eds rod and for once I want to get a custom built multi tip rod that will last me "forever". What rod would you buy for big eds like garrick, kob and kingfish if money wasn't the main consideration?

My requirements for the rod is (in no specific order):
1 - Has to be a 3 piece
2 - Has to be HMG
3 - Must be able to handle 6,7 and 8 oz weights.

So far I've had a look at the Pentagon medium HMG's with a medium and heavy tip but what about Assasin or Purglass?

The above rod will be paired with a Trini 30.

the Loomis shockwave is descent and its 3 piece etc. i must say though i far prefer using fiberglass rods to target eds, but thats just my opinion.

You wont go wrong in buying the assasin. I have one and can say that it is a great rod.

you're gonna have to buy a standard multi-tipped rod and then have it customized...

Purglas is an Intermediate Modulus (IM9) blank. If I were you I'd go for the /3 or /4, depending on how often you intend catching big kingfish... /3 more than enough for kob and garrick, but a kingie over 20kg might just need the /4 to be pulling back... I feel if you go more than the /4 you're gonna be pulling the jaw out of the garrick and kob

I used my HMG Sharkey to slide livies when I was down in Port Edward and it just felt a little too stiff for eds fishing. I went vas twice with biggish garricks (in the 10kg to 12kg range) and it just didn't feel all that comfortable ... It probably is better suited for more medium to heavy shark angling.

Hence the quest to get the ultimate big eds rod.

@ shad-mad ... I agree that Loomis is probably not a bad bet but I'm on a quest to find the ultimate customized rod.

@ Aqua ... Do you reckon Craig will be able to give some advice on the Purglass options and custom building? What about Sea Grand as an edibles rod?

I would buy it with 2 tips:

Standard tip. the fact is the rod is designed for a purpose and the heavy tip is matched for that purpose. the first part of a multi piece to break is always the light tip.

I do a lot of refurbs of multi tip rods and in 80% of the cases i redo only the heavy tip, in 19% I do the heavy and medium and in 1% i do the light.

IMHO the multi tip rod is just a marketing Gimmick

The 2nd tip I would buy is the Short heavy tip which is basically the Shark Extreme medium tip - that's the one you would slide a bait for a big Kingy with.

I have one of these rods and in this exact configuration. With the standard tip you can cast 5oz with larger bait, 6oz with standard baits or 8oz for slide or with a pencil bait.

Add the short heavy tip and casting an 8oz with bait or 10oz slide is possible

Combination custom built with Fuji MNSG guides and Trigger winch will set you back around R3600-3800

Purglas 350/4 would as standard so basically all you are looking at and with same build currently cost R2400 and with new HMG builds cost around R3300.

For eds fishing I prefer a mix of HMG and Intermediate carbon as it gives the best of both worlds.

Lighter, just as strong and the tip has a bit more whip in it making it more sensitive and prevents hook pulls and the cushioning helps to protect lighter lines when bigger fish lunge for freedom, especially close to the bricks.

In short my dream rod would be an HMG base, 75%HMG mid section and a 25%HMG tip. Light, powerful and capable of casting 5oz+Bait to 10oz slide weight.

The USA rod makers have shown that using the right engineering you can make a light enough rod that can deliver just as much power and not being HMG is less brittle and less prone to snapping under extreme pressure.

Is this possible. We're working on just such a rod.

We have just finished an ultra thin 11' blank that can cast from a 1oz to 6oz lure using mechanics just as indicated here (without HMG) and it can be used with tackle up to 80lbs braid, it's big brother will do 4-8oz and take up to 130lbs braid

Custom Purglass 350/4 would be a good option

I also use a 400/6 BM HMG Errol Holmes for large Edibles

Poseidon Meduim HMG for Edibles

and Sentation Shad Pro Spin 12' for small edibles and for Spoons

I had a looooong chat with Brendon last week when I was down in Margate ... and the setup you described is exactly what he suggested as well.

The reason for my post was to see what other options there are but your endorsement and Enigma's about the BM blanks and specifically the Pentagon's are slowly but surely persuading me to go this route.

Now it's just a question of getting the Minister of Home Affairs to agree to the said purchase ...
