rod alternatives to long range

hi fellow anglers

please assist me on this,

i've searched the forums and allot of emphasis has been placed distance and rods that are for extreme to long range. Most of these rods seem to be the on the stiffer side with a fast taper or action.

i am looking for information and help choosing a fishing rod
thats more suited for some one that does not require specialist casting skills to achieve a good cast. thus looking at a medium action rod which can be loaded by some one that has a slow or medium casting style.

please if you guys can give me recommendations on these type of rods.

i'm not meaning to complicate it to much -- but looking at a rod that is of a good quality carbon fiber / graphite if possible hmg, some what of a slim blank thats fairly light also and responsive.

please feel free to throw in some name's that i can go have a look at?

thanks

If you stretch your budget a bit you can pick up beastmasters for about R1000.They are great rods they play a fish great and you can get good distances with it and it is very easy to load it is also very light, the only thing I would do to mine is fit it with lo riders for extra distance.I have the 12 ft 3 lb rod,imo the best all rounder of the range but if you want more distance get the 13ft 3.5lb,altough you will get more distance with 13 feets they are uncomfortable to fish with for a social angler a 12 feet great since that bit of extra distance will not affect you.But you can get the best rod in the world if you can not cast you will not get distance so rather work on your technique before buying rods and thinking they will improve your casting.Other options that also look nice is the sensation velocity at the bottom of your budget and the new shimano forcemaster that also feels like a great rod altough I have not casted with it,you will get them for about R800

hey man

i have looked at the velocity, the person that i am getting them for finds them to stiff.

also the forcemaster looks exaclty the same as the velocitys?

i am also thinking of buying a rod for long range
western accessories advised me on the waft black amaba. this is a fibre glass rod and is flexible and very light.
the sensation velocity is stiff and graphite. waft rods are made in japan whereas sensation is made in china and one cannot compare the qualities.
i am confused as you are. i sent a pm to enigma and he advised me on the velocity . i got a quote from western accessories for them at R530. you should also look at the sensation rocket . western accessories has them for R735. they have lo rider guides and have the extreme distance casting system.
i am going down to western accessories tomorrow and probably will buy the velocity but will keep my mind open to other options.

ps if a rod is too stiff it might be able to cast far but its ability to fight a fish might not be as good, especailly when setting the hook as amny a time the mouth of the fish can be riped apart.

just my opinion

Have a look at this link: www.sealine.co.za/view_topic.php?id=42475&forum_id=80

What you must understand is most of the rods mentioned in this thread are for getting extreme ranges and not for general fishing purposes. The shimano forcemaster and the velocity might have the same guides but the blank will differ.Just pick up a beastmaster and feel it a bit really not that stiff and you will still be able to get good distance with it.Fit it with lo riders and you have a near perfect all round rod that can cast great and is soft.More money but worth it and you only buy once.I had a waft raging bull that I sold that I got about 15m more with.It is a good casting rod but way too stiff for papgooi and also not as easy to load.Best option is to try and get the rods an cast them all to get a feel of them and which one suites you.

@ Gcvanheerden i am with you on the beastmasters, they are great rods -
i personally have 2 sets both the 3lbs and the 3.5lbs versions

the rods that i am looking for are is a gift for my uncle.

from his casting style etc - it would be difficult for him to load
the velocity or even the rocket.

i've been thrown some names that i should look at

sensation torpedo
jackel vxr
waft black mamba
okuma tournament pro
adrenalin carp extreme (2 tips)
blue marlin fire burst (2 tips)

@Eesa Ahmed - the black mamba is a carbon fiber rod and not glass fiber,
also the rockets are more for extreme range casting which is a a good value for money rod.

the verlocity is less stiff comared to the rocket whoich will make it easier to fish.
but both rods will need you to brush up on your casting skills as it becomes important to load those rods properly and also timing is important to achieve the most from those rods.

also at westerns i'm guarenteed that they will 9 time out of 10 try and sell you one of there own waft rods over any other rod that they have in store.

i also am biased to believing the westerns sales pitch.

The VXR and the Tournament Pro is also stiff rods, that's now if I look at your standards.

My suggestion will be the Black Mambas as 1st prize and then the Shimano Alivios as 2nd prize.

Hope you come right. :wfish

Delwyn,
I think it is very important to get the whole package right.
12ft Black Mambas or Alivios should be fine. Use descent reels like the Shimano DL 6000's and rest of the range upwards. The are other makes, but the size of the spool is very important for getting distance. The main line should be at the most 7lb XX Hi Abrasion(.21mm). Use 18-22lb leader. Some advice to your uncle:. I like to use M1.5 weight with a small bol when I want to get more distance. A Bigger feeding bol doesn't give you more distance. I also do a descent length from the rod tip to the bol. Be careful not to bounce the bol when you cast. If I need max distance I would use a bottom trace with a P4 or P5 with a very small bol, just enough to get the dips on.

If your uncle try this as a guide, I will put my head on a block he will improve his casting with at least 20 - 40 m.

Good luck.

@gc yes the rods are just for general weekend / social fishing.

lol the toppies are getting old now and now longer able to do what they used to do.

@Eesa Ahmed - on one of the previous bank anglers there was an explanation about loading a rod etc

but i'll try do my best to explain

if you think of a rod as a spring that stores energy,
to load the rod is to effectively get to bend during your casting action. which will look some what of a j shape to a c shape depending on the taper / action on the rod.

so the more the rod bends in your cast the more energy it stores in that loading process. so when you release the line the energy in transfered and some what gets your bait flying like a missile to the horizon.

hope hope i've made some sense to explaining it?

so like james craven has said there are various factors that make a good cast:

one would be;
having a long drop from the rod tip to the bait, also having a small pendulum swing in the cast,
also the timing to let the line go at about 50 degrees into the horizon.
when punching the cast using the full extention of the rod but and pulling it all the way through.
