Riviersonderend

Hi

A very good friend of mine has moved to a cottage on a farm which has a beautifull stretch of the Sonderend River running through it. This place has everything for small mouth bass- running water through lots of snags, waterplants, steep bank drop-offs. I wish my pictures did justice to the beauty of this spot.

Anyway I fished there a couple of hours inbetween helping her move, but nothing. Could anybody please tell me if you still get SMB here and what lures would work?

Pictures in the next post..................

She's a very lucky lady.

The Riviersonderend runs out of Theewaterskloof dam and into the Breede River, while I've never fished there it seems inconceivable that it wouldn't have a good bass population. Hopefully we'll hear of some good catches after you've had a chance to fish there some more.

As far as lures go, I'd suggest smaller (4 inch) plastic worms or lizards, Texas rigged and maybe the odd crankbait.

I caught a small bass and a blugill this weekend here. Both on 3" plastics on a weedless jig. I have not caught a bluegill since I was 10yo!!!

I have found that a small in-line spinner works far better than anything in a small stream. But don't expect to get them back after ever cast. S

Still they are worth it.

I used to haul the smallies from my float tube from the campsite at Grayton all the way up to the bridge further up river but was last there in 2007 and it was like a whole new river, muddy and really dirty only managed one largey and not a smallie to be had ...apparently suffering from the carp and barbel explosion in Theewaterskloof.

Hi,

The small mouth have definately taken a beating owing to the barbel getting into the system.I have fished the breede for many years and their numbers have dwindled drastically in the last two/three years.

Owing to the fact that smallies are more aggressive, they protect their nests and areas more than largies do, all that happens is old whiskers comes along, finds a smallie staring him down and sucks him up. Take a look a Voelvlei, I remember some of the best smallmouth fishing I have had there, and I don't think there is one left !!
