Rigs for Kabeljou, Geelbek, Steenbras, Galjoen & Shad at Overstrand area

Hello all. New to this forum (and fishing)

Every year my family travels up to De Mond in Western Cape and this year I have agreed to go fishing, all gear supplied on condition I buy my own rod.

I see that the common fish in this area are geelbek, kabeljou and steenbras. I assume these are saltwater fish which means we would be fishing off the rocks/shore somewhere.

Now for my question (bearing in mind that I understand that a miracle rod that does everything doesnt exist), what would be a good choice for rod that would work for this application and possibly some fishing off a pier (Gordons bay for example)?

My budget is not massive since it is my first rod and I dont want to break the bank and upset my partner before I have even had a chance to enjoy this sport.

hi firstly you have posted this question on the wrong forum page so you might not get that much advice lol my question would be can you cast a multiplire reel or only a spinning one?

I have only ever cast with a spinning reel (thats coffee grinder right?)

Basically the situation I am in is that I was offered to be given a reel of my choice (within reason) if I buy the rod. So I'm off to a local tackle shop that every fisherman I know says is the place to go. Once I have chosen (read - been sold whatever the guy tells me to buy) a rod, I need to choose the reel to go with it and it will be bought for me. I just need to know what to get.

What i do know is that it will be for saltwater only, but I will not be fishing from a boat, only shore/rocks/river mouth.

if i were you id go in tell the salesperson your situation and lack of knowledge with regards to tackle tell him your budget and that your looking for a general rod and reel many new anglers are too shy to ask for advice and as a result use very inadequacy tackle eg-a 8ft with a 10000 size spinning reel and 0.50 line for estuary fishing even... your question is very open ended and you could get 100 different ideas seeing as you are knew id recommend a 10ft rod that is capable of casting up to a 3 once and a 5000 or similar sized reel good luck and tight lines

So this is the rod that I ended up getting. Its a Rovex Graphite Shad 12' 4-5oz. The reel will probably be a Shimano Alivio ST 6000 FA.

Thanks for the advice. Looking forward to fishing in Arniston in 2 weeks time!

That setup is perfect for you..A guy who works for me caught a 6kg 'tail yesterday morning on the same/similar setup (10' rovex, alivio 10000) and it was just fine and it is not his first with the gear. Perfect tackle for a beginner!

Hey Guys, Thank you very much for all the useful information. I'm new to this forum and would appreciate any tips on where to go fishing in Cape Town area. I was down at Mosselbay for a bit of a holiday and thought I should try the fishing thing like all men do and caught myself 2 x 8kg White Steenbras. This happened about a year ago and needless to say......I'm hooked. Thank you in advance. Jacques
