Rigging of mullet

OK...

Saturday had some dismal fishing - end of story.

This morning took the halfbeaks and flying fish (had to try) rigged yesterday for a cast or two after a late Sunday morning in bed.

First in line - a halfbeak. About 30 minutes of absolutely nothing then - WHAM - a half arsed attempt by my enemy about 5 meters out (again creamish/brownish colouring). So an invigorated session started.

Next cast (50 m on this bait and rod) a strike about 30 m out, speed up the retrieve and another strike - both failed attempts. Ok...so something's out there that want my fishy.

Cast again...again strike, strike again and missed. Third attempt... fish chashing and BAM - fish on. A couple of runs with some spectaculair aerobatics and three minutes later the prize. A beautiful 2.1 kg West African Ladyfish (Tenpouder for any Yanks outthere  - related to the Tarpon with an incredible big bony mouth), luckily for me the first hook got him perfectly from the outside corner of the mouth  while the tail hook is still missing in action being ripped completely from the wire trace somehow.

Needless to say the baby is being baked with a tomato and onion sauce by my wive after I filleted (past tense for fillet please?) the fish.

So it is not the usual suspect but it is some kind of result for me for the moment...the best part was actully playing with the hunting insticts of this fish, getting it to strike again and again - many thanks to Sealine for helping in the mental calm to think like a fish.

Ok long story short here he is...

Buhe truth is still outhere...

This is not 'THE' one as it does not have any teeth capable of dissecting the bait so neatly. Will go on the hunt again tommorrow.

Angel 1 - I had a look at the cubera snapper and does look like it may be the suspect, just dont know about the teeth capabilities of the rascal -like I said it comes right to my feet and sometimes strike while the bait is dangling in the water infront while I'm on the phone or undoing some Kakk.

That was my 1st thought also, but over here it is most certainly classified as a Ladyfish (type in West African Ladyfish on fish base and maybe you'll se my fish - only pic besides the drawing if they accepted it). Shitelota bones but have to finish work before I go try the taste.

I thought so. Definitely same family. Stretch them first to break those Y shaped bones. Excellent for fish cakes

Loams, my boss from SA is here so fishing took a step backward for the moment - did get it by a barracuda the other day I believe, hit my halfbeak from the side and bit clean through with the hook being in it's mouth but not hooking - lasted all of 10 seconds and only got a bait back that was shredded in three. I probably shouldn't have fight it from the start and let it take it's time.

Got him and...lost him!

Sunset, springtide high - ideal setting for a killing with mullet.

First mullet: 10 minutes in gets dissected in half - no result.

Second mullet: only a scratch (maybe a rock), move a bit left thinking he might have moved on. Nothing - move back to my spot.

Third mullet: a couple of casts and I get hit by my feet by a steamtrain, I let him make a run with the bait before tightening up and starting the fight. He heads straight down and runs parallel with the rocky shore, the fight is terrific but the rising tide helps me and I get the bugger to my feet, washed up between some rocks - the hook is set perfectly in the corner of the mouth of this monster...a snapper. I see a big wave approaching and jump down the rockface to grabhold of the fish but too late and get washed allover the place. So I grab the line in one hand, rod in the other and get cut up by the line and rocks (still bleeding)...line snaps at the swivel to my steel trace. MOTHER F#@*ker!!!!!!!!

But it was like Angler said a snapper (And most probably a Cubera Snapper looking at the colours and teeth), I will not geustimate the weight coz I know that I'll be lying.

Thus to conclude: 2 questions.

1. Are they territorial or can I expect more of them in the same area?
2. How long does a hooked fish take to recover it's fighting spirit (considering the hooks are still with him and I want my hooks back).

Son of a ..............

Ok, you'll get him soon I'm sure. I don't know how long it takes for hooks to fall out of a fish and don't know anything about Snapper. Methinks Nepps will be able to give you some more info on them.

I heard they taste good tho..... This will probably be the best tasting snapper ever LOL
