Review - Lowrance's New Elite5

Lowrance has introduced the Elite5 to help fill the gap left by the 5” screen colour combo units such as the old LMS series being discontinued.

In my opinion I believe that Lowrance has actually done a very good job if this was their objective. Here are my reasons:

  1. Cost for starters, the old LMS520 for example cost around R10 000, with the Elite5 coming in at around the R7000 mark.[/*]
  2. The Elite5 has far superior fish and structure finding ability because of the new wide coverage area of the dual frequency 83kHz 60° beam being added without having to purchase an LBS-1 (R9800).[/*]
  3. The high power peak to peak 4000 watts of the Elite5 will give you all the depth penetration needed for any coastal, estuary, harbour and freshwater angler.[/*]
  4. The SolarMax PLUS screen is no gimmick, it is super bright in comparison to the LMS520.  I stand to be corrected, but I believe it is 1000 nits. (your laptop is only between 200 – 300 nits)[/*]
  5. The New TrackBack feature allows you to move your cursor back over interesting showings you passed over even several minutes previously and take waypoints of them.  This is like having a six foot wide screen.[/*]
  6. The powerful yet simple menu will even have many other brand users that have been previously afraid of the mega feature menu of the HDS series upgrading to the Elite5.[/*]
  7. The GPS is also an upgrade from the 12 channel of the LMS to a 16 channel of the Elite5, thus offering higher accuracy.[/*]
  8. When Lowrance announced that the old Nautic Path charts were discontinued, it came as a bit of a shock, because all that was left was the Navionics Charts.  As detailed and impressive as the Navionics charts are, the R4000 – R5000 price tag scared a lot of users away.  But that has been solved now with Navionics offering Lowrance users the choice of a western and southern, or eastern (Includes Inhambane – Guinjata/Paindane area) and southern chart at the same price as the old Nautic Path charts.

I could go on and on highlighting other smaller features that make the Elite5 a great mid range unit – but this is the time to leave you to go have a look at your budget and work out when you will be placing your order for a brand new Elite5 unit with a 3 year warranty by Lowrance SA.

Thanks Fishton. You have made my search for a finder and GPS unit so much easier. I really appreciate your time both on the forum and on the phone. Looks like this is the unit for me.
I will chat to you later.
