Hey once again...jeez i'm fired up this week bout dropshot and keep finding myself inspired and motivated to post new topics and get you guy's inputs.....after reading chris's post on not being successful and you guys explaining the understanding of your target species ,i thought it'd be awesome if we could get some various species down in black n white with their retrieve type and their most productive time of day...ok so we all no tht If i were to target a gurnard(or bartail i think?) one would need to allow his lure to settle 1st and very slowly give a short upward flick of the rod tip from its neutral downward position with a consecutive revolution of the reel....now wat about the ffg questions : blacktail retrieves? Perch? Spotted pompano? And whatever other species you guys feel like sharing knowledge over wil be wicked. Grunters in the bay? (should the shrimp lure be retrieved in a similar pattern to the gurnard retrieve hence allowin it to create little puffs on the sand followed by a quick flick of the rod tip to give it it's "flutter panic" effect? Or should one retrieve it far off the floor and without any puffs still give it the flutter? Plz shed some light also on the retrieval for kings more importantly how should one maintain the "double tap" as i've read,should the retrieve be a flat out fast one with quick pauses to give the rod tip its quick double taps or should the double tapping be incorporated into the retrieve whilst still maintaining the reeling non stop? plz guys Help! Hey Mate,
What I can say ( all theory of course )
Remember that with a quick action rod and fireline, you will have a quick action on the rod, so if you tap you prawn up 1.5m, this is the action that it will have. Unfortunately I cannot shed light on Kingies, but I think a quick erratic action with a 1/8 ounce jighook, or even no jighook and maybe a 4 or 5 inch jerkshad might do it.

The double tap should be 2 small flicks within the lifting action of the road and not 2 big lifts.

For the prawn effect, I reckon horses for courses. So if the water is clear then I would probably crawl it with less jumps, but with a more coloured water, more jumps.

When you prawn is in the shallow, have a look at the speed that your retrieval has on the prawn, tou might think it is slow but meanwhile it is far too quick for a prawn. I think that most of us dropshotters are to impatient when it comes to this type of fishing.

With Blacktails, I just let it drift in the wash, and keep my slack to a minimum.

Thanks for the advice bro! i was fishing this morning and at 1st light i left my conventional tackle aside and whipped out my dropshot and boy am i glad i did...the shad kept bugging me with their evil antics of either biting me off on the leader or the usual chomp n chop behind the hook so i walked a bit further and found a schweet li'l rock formation just off the dip and BANG! a nice li'l blacktail of about +-20cm(my first ever!) on the cullem baby shad...thereafter i switched to my berkley sandworm (natural colour) and on the second cast went straight ON DAD! A few more blacktails...then a 2 butter blacktails thereafter(think this is its correct alias...dark brownish with creamy yellowish stripes ) a few casts later and a beaut. Of a butter blacktail...33cm and bang on the money 1kg ! Wat an awesome fight esp on my med. Berkley and abu with 4lb fireline and a 10lb fluoro leader... i must admit tho my strike rate has been increasing ever since changin to fluoro ... Cant wait to dish out some plastics again tomoro

You must keep a 18g Toby spinner in your box with a decent thick leader on, just for those annoying Shad feeding frenzies. Trust me, a 1.5kg shad on light tackle is an adrenaline buster.  But I haven't done it on this tackle yet,

If the weather holds up here in PE, I will hopefully also get a 30cm+ Blacktail. I will hopefully be tring a new spot tomorrow.

Thhat is what I enjoy about Dropshotting, the chance to move quickly if something is not working.

Schweet wil get tht toby thingie!...yeah i usually have a ball on light tackle for shad during open season wit an 8ft kingfisher stimulator rod (thin as hell) and a lekker small spoon hehe ...wil be out and about tomoro as well...only prob is i'm fresh out of sandworm hey wil have to brave myself and just try and make a day out of the usual plastics cheers and tight lines boet

Hey dropnut.
I have had the good luck to fish at Mosterts Hoek between Cape st Francis and oysterbay. Man the blacktail have spots the size of 7 singles on their tails there. Really cool on .24 line and a light rod. Just use a heavy leader line.
