Retiring old tackle

After recently purchasing a Loomis Shockwave 12' and pairing it with one of my SealineX30sh's I finally found a replacement for my faithfull old polly/Daiwa 12' combo, this setup has served me for the last 17 years, which previously replaced a Penn500 Jigmaster and Barracuda 12'6" (1974 to 1993) but the new is way better than the old, today fishing in 20 to 30 knot winds at Cape Point, line bowed like sickle I could still detect bites and landed a couple of fish, for me this was unbelievable!!! I just wonder how many more anglers are perservering with old school tackle and missing out on a whole new experience.

In theory, you shouldnt have to retire tackle. With reels you can replace every part and still have a working reel, even if nothing on it is orginal. With rods, provided you dont break them, you can fish with them your whole life, replacing eyes when needed, and so on. But technology helps us catch more fish, and also most anglers get tired of their tackle and want something fresh now and then

I usually retire something when it wears out beyond what its worth to repair, or when it breaks

In the western cape - especially summer its all about "lighter rods" to combat the wind and for me reels with higher gear ratios for reef fishing!

So i retired my penn 500's about 10 years ago for speedmasters - huge difference and superior drags and my heavy carbon fibre rods for 3 pieces graphite rods...i couldnt have made a better move :)

No more worries about roof racks and rods sticking out the car - safer as they are locked away from criminals...much lighter and sensitive so fishing long hours in howling wind is bearable.

The faster gear ratios and superior drags on the reels make for less tackle lost and more fish landed :)

I have since purchased other rods and reels because you can never have too many - but the principals are the same!

Just a pity there arent as many fish around as back in the day!!!

hell , this is a touchy subject to me lol

I have a couple of old rods that my Grandfather use to catch Couta from the Bluff [ages ago ] i will never stop fising with them , they are so old , but amazingly light, and stip claps the fish , i have a couple of Graf rods , exages , loomis ect ect , but if condisions allow i will wip out the 'durbanite '

On the offshore side , call me lazy but i prefer the new stuff, tlds tias ect , no Penn senator in our spread ,or chunking but , my Penn500 jiggie , will remain my cracker reel of choice , can take bumbs , water, i have landed lots of fish with him!

i do have Shimmies for surf fishing and spinning from the boat
lures can last ages , but some of them you just have to 'let go' , makes a good keyring or something on your bar at home!!!! lol

The new tackle rods reels ect are so pleasant to fish with for long hours and if conds are bad !
