Just a quick report back.
Started fishing @ about 7:00 at the old dam wall. We caught a few bass, on a variety of baits, including various shapes and colours of crankbaits and softbaits. Most of these bass were small with the largest estimated at 1.2kg.
@11:00 we decided to move to the island. In-between the submerged timber we fooled a few more bass, with they bulk falling prey to a firetiger crankbait.
We then decided to drift along the Southern bank of the island (as we don't have a trolling motor. Here we caught a few more 0.8-1kg class bass.
When one of our lures got stuck, we drove closer to free it, only to realise that it was stuck in a gill net. We decided to remove it from the water, not only because as far as I know it is illegal, but it also poses a threat to boats. The net was approximately 100m from the bank in 4-5m of water, and totally submerged. Little did we know what this would require of us. Within the first 5m we found a 3kg Carp. We cut it loose only to find another Carp about 10m further. This continued for the next 350m of net (according to the GPS). In total we found about 50-60 Carp, 2 Barbel and 1 Kurper, with only 2dead fish. The rest were safely released, although you can just imagine how many of them would actually survive.
The gill nets seem to be a very serious problem at the moment. We removed one other small net. There was another we tried to remove, but ended up leaving, as we could not stomach the smell of the wrotten fish (mostly Kurper). We also saw 2/3 others that were entangled in trees.
After sipping a cold beer after our long work session, we moved to a spot close to the launch site. Here my dad caught about 5 more fish on a Senko before we called it a day.
To sum up. We caught a fair amount of Bass, although the average size was rather small.
PS. The entry fee was about R90 for 4 persons with a boat. We also paid the R50 once-off for the boat additionally.

Geez ben nice one i should have put in the effort and gone out ! Pity about the nets worst part the fish are just going to waste if they rotting ! Wish a proper reserve and resort could be established out there woukd love to camp there without worrying. Shot for the feed back and well done on saving a few fooshies
