Hi Alan , I sighed up to your site but got spammed out… was overseas for a while and forgot my password and now my e-mail adress won’t be allowed on your site or it is blocked, so I sighed up to Sealine! Hi everybody!

This is my first post. I am 16 years old and have fallen in love with servicing my reels.I service my TLD 30A, Daiwa Grandwave 50 , TLD star and my Penn international 80, coming up will be 2 Tiagra 50 WA’s.I have learnt a tremendous amount from this site and Allen's site, it’s amazing especially all the pictures!!!!!!!

I have a few questions to ask and u guys have the knowledge.I will try to explain the best I can. I want to learn and learn the right way too.Thank you so much! You and the other mechanics are the answer to my problems

QUESTION 1: These things are bothering me: firstly, I have been through almost all your rebuild tutorials and have found that u do not apply grease to the gears of the smaller type reels such as Shimano tld stars, Daiwa Saltists etc, only on the bigger gold series reels such as Penn internationals and Shimano Tiagras. Must you? And also can you use the Yamaha blue marine grease for it?

QUESTION 2: TLD Star 15/30 and 20/40 u applied a light coat of grease to the spool ends. Must this be done? This is the only tutorial that u have done this. Does this affect the cast distance and freespool a considerable amount?

QUESTION 3: my main concern is the bevills or pressure washers cupped like ( or ). In my Tld 30A. I have four. What will be the best way to position them? They are in the stock configuration ()() I read something about this being the least stiffest/softest the medium is (()) and the stiffest is (((( and that it allows for settings inbetween. What would be the best configuration for them without adding a fifth one. I would like to increase my drag and have freespool at that drag setting because at the drag setting now there is zero freespool! (I think it is about 16lb or 8kg at strike). Should I leave it in its stock config ()() or stiffen them up to (()) or ((((? I fish for Yellowfin with this reel and at high drag settings it looses freespool to a point when I have to pull out line with my hands to get the lure into position behind the boat..I have read that making the bevills stiffer,it increases drag and allows freespool where u previously had zero freespool. Hope this makes sense.

Does it make a difference if I used the stiffest configuration: (((( in the opposite direction on the shaft like this))))? Or for example a set of five positioned like ((()) used in the opposite direction like (())) Would it even matter or make any difference?

Please explain in detail what the bevills do and the difference it makes when changing the bevills config to make it stiffer or adding another one.I have a vague idea of what it does if you make the config stiffer but read something about it allowing a higher drag setting or increasing the drag and also allowing freespool where previously It lost freespool. If you make the config stiffer will it make the drag increase rapidly? eg: on my friends Tld 25 leverdrag :I changed the config from ()() to (()) and when I have the liver at strike and it has 4 pound drag and I increase the liever to full, it rapidly increase the drag to 10 pound without slightly increacing? This happened to me in a config of (())
The drag at strike will be low but increase it to full and it rapidly increases the drag.Does the stiffer config of the bevills do this?

QUESTION 4:Another of great importance to me is that I have found that the metal drag washers are slightly rounded on one side and the other completely flat. I think it is rounded slightly downwards too, Especially the eared drag washer: its ears are bent downwards which is the rounded side. In your pictures and from my experiences I have learnt that the washers rounded face must face up and the flat side down in the main gear.I have taken a brand new Daiwa grandwave carefully apart and It came from the factory like that! So, the ears must face downwards which is obvious on a shimano tld star as its ears are extended and are facing at 90 degrees downward, but it’s not so obvious on a Daiwa Grandwave or Saltest(which has 2 eared washers it is only bent slightly, not very noticeable)IS THIS CORRECT?

QUESTION 5:And just to get this crystal clear- a good serviced reel has greased sideplates whether graphite or aluminum, non spool Berings packed with Yamaha Blue grease and re-shielded if possible, spool Barings left open and lubed, dog pawls lubed with corrosion-x , anti reverse Berings lubed with corrosion-x, drag- greased carbon fiber with Teflon grease e.g. calls, shimano drag grease. The rest of the parts a light brush of grease (yoke plate, Clicker assembly, screws, drive shaft, washers etc.). Is this Correct? These are previous questions: GEARS LIGHTLY GREASED WIH MARINE GREASE (YAMAHA BLUE)??,AND THE SPOOL Drum LIGHTLY GREASED?

Question 6- can you clean graphite drag washers with benzene as I saw a post by Trophery of a daiwa grand wave and he put the fabric washers in benzene to clean??

One last thing.. upon getting my brand new Shimano TLD 30 , I wanted to test its full drag potential… so I turned the dial tight and lifted the leaver, which became increasingly hard and freespool was lost. Suddenly as I was lifting the lever, it popped and the real wasn’t functioning I found that the leaver had popped out of place.. so I opened it up, loosened the dial and put the leaver and dial back! It worked again, but found that the bearing on the left hand shaft would not slide off the shaft! Whats up with that??? I want to remove the shields!

Wow! That was a load off my chest. Eegerly awaiting the reply .It’s such a relief that u guys can give me professional advice and answers. WHAT A PRIVILAGE!!! Tanks a million!!!!This will finally put my mind to rest!!!! LoL im obsessed with reels and servicing them.
