Reading marine notice 4 of 2016 it says, Restricted Radiotelephone Operators Certificates (Marine) and (Marine - VHF Only) are valid for voice communications only. To prevent unauthorized uses of DSC enabled marine VHF radios on the anticipated date of 1 January 2017 and taking into consideration the large number of holders of these certificates, the examination for SRC and SRC conversions should be undertaken urgently.


I did my VHF license in November 2014 and was issued my license in January 2015 - Marine (VHF only), so i phoned SAMSA to find out a little more about this conversion.


The person i spoke to said i would now have to go and do an additional exam with an approved accredited institution to convert my VHF license to SRC. Hilton Jones at SAMSA is apparently the chap to speak to, however he does not take phone calls due to the large number of enquiries.


I've forwarded SAMSA an email requesting the list of accredited institutions in Durban that offer this SRC course and examination.

I've just recieved this email from Hilton Jones


Good day,
At present we are still working on accreditations of training institutions.
Please be advised that your current Restricted VHF operator’s certificate is still valid for the purpose for which it was issued – voice communications and as long as the coast stations are watch keeping on channel 16 which will be until 2018 at least you are legally qualified and the safety aspect is covered.
