RDW 17-5-2009

Monster and myself attended the Sealine social yesterday at Leeuwkop. It was lekka to hook up with all the guys whom share a similar passion. But all this talk of fishing made us very keen to go and wet a line and due to some unfortunate unforseen circumstances Monster was suddenly available for SUnday.

A quick check of the weather report showed heavy winds - 25km/h normally anything around 10km/h is already strong enough but we decided that we would brave it anyways. We decided last minute to hit RDW as I had been there the weekend before and knew some of the patterns.

So at 05h30 we departed for RDW fill with Juice en route and arrived at the dam by 06h30 (just as the sun was rising). We were suprised at the number of baots already there (about 25 odd) and we knew with the wind we were in for some tough angling.

We started close to the launch and it was not long before Monster put a fish in the boat even though it was a dink it was size. On the very next cast he dropped another. Then it was my turn - I too landed a Dink and missed another in quick succession. I was faffing with another rod so I cast layed the rod on the deck and I noticed the line twitch and watched a little closer and it twitched again so I took up the slack felt the fish and hit him. Felt like a decent fish and suddenly he broke me off on 12lb line (Damn I wish I saw that one) anyways I caught another one that was better size and carried on further as did monster and we picked up a few more here and there - nothing huge but with the cold water everyone a fighter - there was plenty of surface activity as the bass were chasing baitfish all over the place. We could not believe how wind still it actually was that I even commented about it (Maybe not a good thing).

Anyways I said we should head out for some Top water action in the main dam.

10 mins of throwing a frog I had a buss come up and hit me but I failed to get  a hookset. this is where the wind started blowing. Monster was throwing a Spro Bronze eye frog and we came to a spot where he said there must be a bass here. 5 mins later he had a dogg bass climb out and kill his frog (I reckon well over 3kgs) sadly it wrapped him and managed to come loose. Now the wind was reallly starting to belt and we moved off into the middle of the dam and fished on a weedline with Spinnerbaits - Monster picked up a good one (whilist sorting out an overwind) and promptly lost another. I failed to connect with anything further even though he had a couple more pickups. We tried to hide from the wind all over the dam and dropped fish here and there but no Joy eventually we decided enough was enough and we pulled out at 13h00.

We spoke to a couple other boats and it seems quite a few of them had blanked - heaviest fish weighed for their club comp was 1.8kgs. Both Monster and myself feel that both our fish on topwater surpassed this size. We did okay on the smaller stuff and would have almost made bag so we had a good morning on the water.

Monster shot for the great company eats etc lekka fishing with you - we must do it again.:wfish

I was wondering why you where using the trolling motor so much.

Plus one needs shake off the worst ice after a wind like that.
