Hi There

I was hoping someone could give me some advice. I fish the breede a fair amount (witsand) and have always fished with bait.

The guys have been catching some Kob in the river on Rapalas.

Can anyone giove advice on rapala fishing trolling behind a boat.

What rapala should i buy, what speed should i troll it and also how far behind the boat should i let it out

howzit , Welcome to sealine , Very intresting , pulling lures in rivers , i have a bit of experiance ,I will try to keep it short and informative !
Good lures is the Cd magnums , the ones with the plastic lip its a 12 to 18 cm lure it think ,obviously the mullet colour , red head , black and white , in very muddy water i will go with a orange or fire tiger colour , we use heavy bass gear with 7'2 rod , flipping sticks works well ,The light beastmaster rods from shimano is jigging sticks but have two that i use Penn seaboys , cullcuttas and Abus we fish with.
You wil have to work you way up and down the river in a zigzag to hit drop offs useally hold fish patrolling the edges , you want that rappie to be close to deep dropoffs where the Cobs patrole , We troll very slow , idle.
Theress no hard and fast rules when it come to trolling for Cob , but i think this will put you in a better direction , any Questions ???? just ask i am in a bit of a hurry , but i will get back to you !

Thanks so much for the response, its very helpful

How far would you let it out behind the boat

I would think quiet a distance, 40 - 50 metres ?

I mostly let the lure out just behind the white water generated by your motors on a slow trawl. (slow)

So 50m is too far. (only because its not practical) With river trawling let your lure vary between the top and about 1 meter, trawl hugging the banks. keep the line 25m max, but again it depends on trawling speed and the rapala /lure you use.

I'm no fundi but good luck, I learned buy trial and error and I'm still nowhere good.

You're targeting game fish so keep close to the banks and shallow water, this is mostly where the "Hunting Grounds" are.

Please let us know how it goes and take other sealiner's advice, good luck.

Ja , no more that 25 m max !!

PS most bass type minnow lures can be used for lighter applications , cordell , Bagleys , Storm ect , ect

Breede only delivered on Rapala this weekend. 4 boats came back with the smallest being 7kg and the biggest 35 kg. All in all 10 fish caught on Rapala between the 4 boats, nothing on bait.

This is one very touchy subject, i for one want to see Rapalas
band on the breede as it decimating the breading stock ! I have done it in the past i must admit but found it to be too easy !! All the fish i caught were in the river to bread especially this time of the year. I know i am going to get flak for this post but the breede is a very delicate ecosystem and if people continue take out all the breading stock well its not going to be long before the only cob you see will be in the hotel bar !!

Hi Tuna

Their is unfortunately more than just 2 camps on this argument. I have no opinion about it as such as I don't fish the river anymore. Prefer offshore.

I must say though, since the flood last year, the fish stocks have increased dramatically. The fishing is like the old days. There is a lot of fish and they seem to come and go as they like.

From what I understand, some people want to make the Breede a no take zone and others are saying that there is plenty of fish. Don't know who is right. But MCM has a permanent person their as well as the 2 guys checking permits and fish levels. I am sure if the data supported it they would change something. I suppose that is another debate.

We have steenbras again which was missing for a looong time. I don't know, it is a good debate to have. But there is definitely a lot more fish and the guys were fishing within bag limit of 1 per man.

All boats were 100% checked on Saturday for license, safety and obviously catch. Nick and the guys were happy to see the fish come off and the size as well.

To the point of the post, Rapalas clearly work on the Breede. Not always though. This last week was a big week. CD18's work best it seems but this weekend everything was working.

HI Freakazoid

The problem with the breede it has a good couple of launching sites and most are not being monitored.I personally release all fish over 10kgs for the simple reason that anything bigger is a waste. I have seen in my time on the breede a good couple of boats with maybe 5-10 fish all in the 20-35kg class being caught in one day on the troll on one boat! All fish sold to the local fish buyer back then ...no names mentioned and this still happens today. I am not saying ban Cob fishing on the breede but if every tom dick and harry start trolling well thats the river in its .....) With out sounding like a braggart in the past when i did troll it was like canned bunny hunting with AK- anyone can drive up and down the river
slaughtering cob. With bait you need to know your story where to sit at what tide, how high up river, what bait-
its just ups the anti and puts the odds back into the cobs favor.

It just my opinion every body has one so ja i say no more and sorry for hijacking the thread Danman.

Cheers

Ja, I unfortunately cannot tell you what the right answer is. I don't fish the river anymore and must say have had dismal success. Can't comment on what has happened in the past. I reckon if you are going to take more than your bag limit it doesn't matter how you catch them, your nuts should be cut off. If you want to catch a lot of fish you are going to have to put them back anyway as you're only allowed one, also doesn't matter how you catch them.

The Breede has been dead for quite a few years, now it is like Christmas. Hopefully everybody sticks to the rules, wishful thinking, but we can only live in hope.

i havent been up there in a looong time , whilst my days trolling there , we got lats of fish , coming back to the breeding stock i also AGREE with you guys , i can honestly say i released a load of fish unharmed , and strong back into the river , we sized down our lures to bass tackle , to get the smaller ones, i know of guys that has spent loads of time on the river without getting one fish on lure !
I MUST ADMIT THAT ITS VERY SENSITIVE SYSTEM , WITH BREEDING STOCK ECT ECT ,

AND SHOULD BE LOOKED AFTER !

Hi Guys

I fished the breede this weekend, trolling with rapala`s. After 4 1/2 hours of trolling up and down, i eventually got my 16kg cob (Expensive fish!). Then that was it..petrol`s finished and on i was on my way back home.  Some nice fish where landed this weekend...i saw the 35kg cob come out next to me...

The thing is that i`m already limited to 1 Cob per day on the breede, so to now limit me even more with not allowing me to use artificial lures (rapala`s)....we`ll, i have a strong opinion about this. I saw one boat using live bait land 2 fish, and that was it. All other fish where landed using Rapala`s. So if i go out and i can only catch 1 cob, i`m going to use the best bait/ lure that i`m allowed to. BUT i will only take 1 cob! My boat was inspected when i got back off the river and i thought it was great that the MCM guys control the slipways. But, as Tuna Fish said, there are alot of other slipways that are not controlled..guess you cant win them all!

Anyways, after reading this post to day, i phoned the senior MCM guy in Witsand and chatted to him about the fishing this weekend and rapala lures on the river. The responce is that the guys are very happy with this indication that the fish stocks are imprving dramaticly on the breede. BUT there is "plans" to "ban" night fishing on the river though...i wont get into this here.

Also fishing with artificial lures (in my humble opinion) is more conservation friendly that taking our prawns/ pencil bait/ harders, etc.

Like freakeziod and the other guys i also prefer off shore, but this wekend this was a no go...the mouth was CLOSED!!!

Tuna fish/ Freakaziod - we must meet up at the Club sometime and  have a couple of beers and then we can debate this until the early hours!!! Like you guys i also want my laaitie one day to experience the breede as i have.

my 2 cents.

Raptor that sounds like a plan.I think we met at whalers in December last years. The Breede is my heaven on earth and have spent countless days/nights fishing hard with a little bit of "drinking" but where in the world can you get a river that you can navigate by boat for 50kms and pretty much fish all the way !! Need to get up there soon.

I know of 1 boat that got a nice leerie on rapala this weekend, unfortuanately the fish was lost in the process of gaffing it..!!!!???!!!

Otherwise its all quiet from the leeries and grunter on the river at the moment...

Actually a leerie is rather good. But first cacthing a 70cm leerie is a problem and once you've caught it ,it is sooo pretty you don't want to eat it. So good point on wanting to gaff it. We always take out by hand, remove the sharp stuff and then decide if it is going to go back in or not.

Superfly - A Leerie is actually a bloody lekker fish to eat! Have you tried it?

I can only presume that this leerie was much bigger than 70cm. I was not on the boat, but know the guy quite well who lost the fish and he would use a gaff if he could have netted the fish.
