Safety, safety, then cost, cool.
Miles, I have the operators license, so no problem. As I understand it, you now need a operators licence to operate any VHF ratio.
I do have a VHF already, but I'm using a hand held unit. I am getting tired of continiously charging it. So the idea is to get a base mount, then put the hand held in my safety bottle.

To all the boaters out there, let that be a warning!! ALWAYS and i mean ALWAYS be prepared to assist a fellow boater in need!! It could very well be YOU requiring assistance the next time.......
Two seasons back, we were commercial tuna fishing. It was 10am and the radio was abuzz the whole morning, with some of the deck boats that saw a flare shot off at 4am that morning. This was duly reported at 4am to Cape Town Radio Station. By about 11am, the commercial tuna fleet managed to find out that the 40'+ vessel, "SHAKA" was unaccounted for. There was a request for boats to go look for them and almost the entire commercial fleet stopped fishing and started searching. When the call came through, we had deep colour on a YF, boated the fish and also joined the search. The vessel "Growler", who was fishing next to use and had left about 3 minutes before us, found the life raft, containing two of the crew members. The skipper and a young angler was lost with the vessel. They got back to harbour at 2pm, at which time the NSRI had still not even reponded!! Thats a good 8 hours AFTER it being reported, via the proper channels!!

The Cobra is a great unit. I've got three units on my smaller boats. Sadly, I'ts got a bit pricy now that Pertec have bought out Radio Holland. I've never heard of 29meg antenna's working on VHF.
:kaykakSay, does anyone know where I can get a short Shakespeare VHF antenna (thats the one specially designed for semi rigid consoles?

My Pacific antenna broke in half , going over a wave on a beach launch- That's the last Pacific I buy. I really want the Shakespeare 5415 2', which is designed for skiboat and semi rigid consoles and is a stainless shortie antenna. No more shattered fibreglass rubbish for me. One is also on it's way out on my buttcat.
The Shakespeare 5415 has had rave reviews around the world. The only problem is that there is no Cape Town dealer listed on the internet.

I recently purchased an entry level icom, and coupled this to the Pacific antenna, and was really impressed that I had clear as daylight comms from Robben Island, with a boat on Rocky Bank. A quick estimate would put that at around 50 nm. Safety first.........no other way, and no chances.
