I agree that a fixed installation is better than a portable in many respects.

And also agree that ICASA staff are all generally friendly and helpful. BUT I'm sorry to rain on your parade. If I understqand your post correctly, you are only half way there

For a VHF you need TWO things. One is a licence to posess it ( which you have got) and sometimes called a "ship station licence" , and ANOTHER to operate it for which you have to sit an exam. The exam itself is not difficult but only once you have passed it will you be issued with an OPERATOR'S licence.
So for two radios you will need 3 documents. 2 x ship station licence, and 1 x operators.
Check it out !   If I am wrong, I owe you a beer ( or two).

Hey Johnno,

Now you got me! I told ICASA that I have two hand held 5W VHF radios, one goes with me to sea and the other stays on land so what do I need? They sent me forms and the licence I have reads FREQUENCY SPECTRUM LICENCE AND/OR RADIO STATION LICENSE OR RADIO DEALER CERTIFICATE. Is this the operator or radio license?
Not once they said I need to do an exam aswell. Now I'm confused?

I think I'll call them on Monday.

I went through the same - that's why i knew -- Am planning to sit the exam soon.
I have the exam manual ( R 20 from ICASA) and it's not difficult, but just need to sit down and get it done.
