hi all
So on the 10th of december im going to the Raaswater resort with a youth group.we are going to do some fishing so i need advice on what bait flavours and dips etc to use for carp.its in the vaal river so there will be yellows.how can i catch them on artlure?can i use my small crankbaits or jerkbaits that use for bass?
As far as barbel go what bait works best?

Lastly hows the fishing there this time of the year?

mainly fly fishing! The best is to get some naturals, shrimps,crab etc. works the best. Witch fly depends what natural baits are around lift rocks look under hyacinths. earthworm very good for all species1

ok thanks.i dont have a fly rod,but i do have small salmo hornets and realy small(2cm) rapala countdowns.whould lures like that be ok for smallmouth yellowfish/largemouth yellowfish.i have mepps inline spinners as well,could those work.
I realy want to catch a yellowfish on my spinning gear so please advise.

For yellow's use natural baits , crabs , shrimp , small platties .

Hi ebee ali, I’ve been fishing the Vaal river for almost 20 years now.  Small rapalas will certainly work. Go look for the yellows in the streams, wade to / approach the rocks in the streams from below and cast just below downstream of the rocks (in that little depression created by the water flowing around the rocks coming from upstream) and retrieve the rapala a fraction faster than the current. You’ll be in no time if the fish is on the bite.
I have had lots of success like that as a youth up near Villiers but prefer the fly rod for the yellows now.
you can try this with bigger rapalas in the deeper pools for sharptooth catfish (barbel as some call them) aswell. endless fun if you hook a nice one with the artlure while you in a canoe.

I recommend the smaller the better and natural colours.
