I know overseas there are commercial spearo's.Not too sure about here in SA though, don't see why there couldn't/shouldn't be,although 1 guy with a speargun versus a boat load of commercial fisherman,I'd put my money on the commercial boat :addn

Guys I am not trying to stir the pot here as it could have been a gaff. Like I said some thing made me suspicious and I am merely trying to verify the law as far as Speared fish and selling them go.

Maybe this is a stupid comment :imnew , but wouldnt the easiest way to tell if it was speared would be to see if there is a spear entry and exit point on the fish? if it was gaffed then it would only be on the one side and not both??

I can recall hearing that one of our top SA Spearo's use to do commercial spearing? Maybe im wrong though? anybody else heard that?

I think it wouldnt be a bad move having commercial spearo's, its more selective, no by catch, etc etc etc

That's why I asked him about the reason for thinking the fish was speared, to little info to say for certain. I've seen gaffs going through the whole fish, not very big fish though and caught on light tackle.

The gaffs on some commercial boats are huuuuuge.

If you are going to wrestle in 100kg of angry tuna you are not going to use a small gaff.

If a small fish comes along that gaff will go right through it.

There are no commercial spearfishing licences.

In Natal it is quite possible to have come from one of the underground commercials.

A lot of those guys sell their fish.

Seen it for myself, when taking part in compies down there.

I once dived with a guy who speared commercialy, and he got his kwota everyday, but did not ask what licences you need. They were four guys and was from the boat.

In my personal opinion, I think this is the most enviromental friendly way of catching fish, altough not the most economic or easy. Altough, if your working per kilo, the spearo might go for the bigger fish, while the guy with the line has to take whatever bites.

I dont feel that it is a stupid comment it's just hard to know because of the lack of info. Honestley your opinion worth as much as the next guys for nobody knows the right answer.

Commercial spearo's seem to be the most ethical of commercial fishing practices allbeit for some biases such as fish size ext.
