On reading this and the ban on gafs in comps i thought if the following might work. When i worked at Bom bom iland resoart on the west coust of africa. We had the same motto on all the bilfish catches. Tag ,or catsh and release was the only way. Photo and thank you off you go for a nother days fight. We had a nylon rope with a knot 2ft from the end. The rest of the rope beyond was flosed out and this was swang on to the bil and then the rope was released from the slid in the so called gaf. Not a hel dit that rope let go of that bil. The littel teeth on the skin of that fish use to grip like hell. Surely the sharks got the same and this might do the trick. Anny one care to try this out the next time you catch a shark. Some of the locals use to tow rope like this behined there dugouts( selfmade boats) and they caught there sailies with that, no hooks and all. Just my 2c and thought.
