Props for 115hp 4 strokes on Buttcat

Hiya.

I am in the final stages of completing my 26ft Buttcat in my avatar. Now I need the advise of the more clever guys. I am fitting 2 x 115hp 4 stroke Mercurys on the back. I need to buy props for the motors. The boat is mostly going to be used for Tuna offshore from Houtbay and the odd trip to the point.

Any suggestions on what props to fit? Pitch? 3 or 4 blade?

Contact a guy by the name of Bruce at Offshore Marine Int in Capetown, tel 021 786 1007. He is quite knowlegeable and stocks and supplies Michigan Wheel props as well as Stiletto props.  I bought Stilettos from him for my 60HP Merc 4 strokes and they outperformed the Merc props I tested.

Failing that you can contact Rutherford Marine in Johannesburg and ask to speak to one of the technical guys about props. You can get the number from 1023, sorry I dont have it. Rutherford Marine are the Mercury Agents, but I must warn you, the Merc props are very very expensive. Michigan wheel and Stilettos are about half the price and in alot of cases better.

Hope that helps

Yep, Bruce will help. Personally much would depend on are you fishing recreationally and want speed, or commercially and want torque. The 115's will work moderately hard on that boat, and hence you want to minimise slippage. I would start off by trying a 4 blade 21". I would also carry a spare one size less for coming back with one dead motor.
