Problem sliding

Hi Guys,

Need some advice, on 3 occasion while sliding the non return gets stuck at the mono to leader knot.

Im using 0.45 with a 0.8 leader and joining with a bimini with figure of eight. Is there a smaller knot i could try with equivalent strength or a way to over come this.

Howzit bud, well there are a few possibilities as to what you're doing wrong.Did you trim your tag ends short enough on your knots? If not the non return could be getting stuck on it.Also when sliding, shake the tip of your rod vigorously, until the non return is below the surface, there after use long sways on the rod, drop the rod horizontely, the lift it up again to 90degrees gettly, but constantly.

1. Figure 8 makes a fairly large knot, try a back to back blood knot - this knot tapers on either side making it easier for the clip to slide over.

2. Try a windon leader, the cats paw knot is extremely small.

3. Cast closer or into a rip, you may be casting too far on a flat beach ie. sinker landing on the sand bank, your bait slides through the trough and actually needs to slide upwards to reach the sinker on the bank.

My rule of thumb is that if I think the bait is at the slide, shake another 5min just to make certain.  Long easy strokes.

When I am finishing up with the shake I pull the rod really tight and give 10 long hard shakes to make sure it's over the leader knot.

If the bait is going to be in for a long time then you've got nothing to lose by giving the rod a good couple of shakes every 15 or 20 minutes, just in cast the slide has come back a bit.  I've in fact had quite a few pick-ups while doing these intermitent shakes or just thereafter, maybe that bit of movement triggers a bite of an investigating fish.

Remember if your line is not kept taught, water action can move the slide back up the line and back over the leader knot. try it.  Anchor your weight on the beach and slide a non-return down it, see if it comes back on a slack line and then try the same with the main line taught.

Even a tapered leader which makes a smaller knot could solve the problem, and possibly "swaying" a bit longer than what you are used to. A habit that I got into is to give a few shakes every now and then even if my bait has probably long gone reached my stopper-ring, it just adds a bit more peace of mind and in my mind may move the bait around a bit to possibly entice something nearby.

Personally I would not use this set-up for sliding. I would at least go o.55 - 0.60 for mainline and 1.0mm leader, but preferably 1.2 and higher windon (depending on your target species)

Good point JL, depends on if it's eds/in-eds. Shake for approx 10 mins vigorously, longer, accentuated strokes once the slide has dissapeared under the waves, always works for me.

hi chief

u shouldnt be having that problem with that line. maybe the surf is shallow?....

how do u know its gettin stuck there?...is it tangles around the knot when u reel in?.
i think a tapered leader or heatshrink over the knot will help.

Yes, exactly! Catching with 0.45 and 0.8mm leader??? A double Fig 8 on this is so small as to be negligible. Chances are the slide is not getting stuck on the knot... in fact it probably has nothing to do with the knot. If you were having that problem with 0.55 and a 1mm leader, I could understand the occasional catch... but with 0.45mm? not much chance of that happening...

come on guys...heat shrink tube over mono? heat and mono do not mix!

How do you know it is getting stuck at the knot?

Best bet is to make sure your tag ends have been trimmed as close as possible(only do this once the knot has been pulled up nice and tight).

Shake vigorously(longish strokes though) once you believe the slide has hit the knot this should allow it to clear the knot.

What I have said is more or less what was said earlier in this thread but I thought I would just put it in my own words as the same information sometimes makes very different sense when stated differently!

P.S. there is no problem with your mainline diam (whatever you are comfortable with, I would say 0.5 minimum though) but I would up the leader to 1mm or maybe the 0.9 from Maxima at least!

....forgot to add, tight lines and let us know when you pull the big one! :wfish

I agree with Reefman and Habib on this one. I would not put heatshrink over the knot though (air shrink could work but not necessary).

I think the problem is caused by the tag pieces of the knot and the depth of the water.

I use wind-on leaders - with this you should have no problem at all.

psy,

I must show you the revised cats paw - the knot is much neater. I am sure Reefman shows it on his wind-on thread as well.

Can pretty much say that have converted the entire C/Gauteng A Side with this knot.

What's really nice about the knot Reefman has shown is that the knot allows you to use a really small loop in the windon that eliminates any possibility of the loop wrapping on one of the guides in the cast.

Seen the large loops make some interesting shapes of guides when wrapping around the guide and a 8 or 10oz weight wanting to fly at the other end.

Just want to say how cold it was here this morning. Had to go to a Freshwater team practice for upcoming Inter Provincial. Was -6 when we got to the water. Needless to say not much happening on the fishing side in that cold Did however manage to get in 100 practice cast with the 10oz Short heavy and the 8oz medium.
