Private dam strategies

I am going to a private dam this weekend.  Any specific strategies for a private dam that does not have regular heavy fising traffic?

This might be to your advantage.
These fish don't normaly associate bait with danger so if you keep your baits natural(worms) and small(competition floaties) you should catch a ton,having said that don't be afraid to try bigger baits(big floaties,miellies on a hair rig and even a boilie or tiger nuts,you might get pleasantly surprised with 10kg+ fish,I've seen it happen before in small private farm dams!

Start off with plain bait, then move on to mild dips if needed. If you can, go with natural baits worms/flying ants

I posted last night, but my post is not showing!

Yes, any natural bait should work. You can also try molasses and honey as a dip when using maize. dough and floats or mixed into brown bread. There is a small dam in Pretoria and the only thing that works for carp there is earthworms. Floaties, dough and dips just don't work there at all.

Thanks this is great help.  Do you have to create any type of feeding spot at all?  I will only be there for Saturday.

I don't actually know, I have never been there.  it looks like about 150m x 80m on the pictures. it may be bigger.

That is another thing. I usually just use a mielie bom. Do I need to make a feeding spot too?

You can get a feeding spot going by constantly casting in you bait on the same spot (kolgooi) A good idea is to throw a few (5-10) bombs early in your sestion and the keep casting on the same spot al day long. The fish will keep coming to the "kol" all day.

The dam was a bit small but the suggested dips worked.  I caught 15 small ones on plain bomb and banana or honey and molasses.  sweet white degie and honey/molassis brown bread backing.

No, I actually forgot to get some before I left.  That might have made the difference.  Apparantly they have big carp in the dam.  why would they not be interested?  the weather was stable and warm.

it was aguest farm outside Ficksburg i went to for work.  Maybe i'll look for a bigger dam next time...

I feel like going back to the vaal (for the 100th time!lol!) to try 'again'. It seems like I won't be fishing this weekend as the timing just might not allow it...:cry1:cry1
