Pre-Spawn

So tell me guys, are the girls feeding up after the winter slumming?? Is the Bass fishing better yet?

I'm no expert on the seasonal patterns etc of any fish let alone LGF's.  However, spawnning is suppose to take place when tha water reaches temps of between 15 to 18 degrees Celcius.

Now for the last 3 trips to Roodeplaat the temps measured was between 12.8 and 14.6 respectively but progressivly warmer.  Now if by any chance that is the only deciding factor (which it's NOT) whether or not pre-spawn is here, then the answer would most probably be a Yes.

The fish I caught on the last three trips to the same piece of water defs saw them moving/swimming around in hunting pack like formations and not really sticking to structure all that rigid as would be expected during the colder times.  Having said this, I also saw some larger fish still sticking to structure although not as tight as they would a couple of months earlier but tight enough and again  there were some larger ones cruising with the rats and mice.

Also something that might be of importance is that early in the morning when the water is around 11 -12 degrees they are no where close to the side/shore, but by around 10:30 when the water next to side/shore has warmed up to about 13,5 degrees they start getting closer to the side/shore and will go into water as shallow as a mere 10 -15cm's, not structure bound at all.

In short, again if fishing and catching rates are the deciding factors ito better catches and catch-rates, then I'd be very willing to state that pre-spawn is deffinately here.

Inanda dam is sitting between 16 and 18 deg but i can assure you the bass are still sitting very deep. 18 to 20 deg is a better range but i guess i varies between areas. Inanda, Goedetrouw and Nagle should come on the spawn first though given the water water and that should start sorta towards the end of August.

Tilapia are dying in huge numbers at Shongweni due to excessive cold temps...water down to 14.5 degs!My feet off the edge of my ski i swear i almost got frostbite!:kaykak

Dams around Pretoria are delivering some healthy females filled with eggs in the shallows. So I think we are heading for some seriously fun fishing this weekend

Hi Guys
Fished Albert Falls on the 31st july. Water temp 13.8, found a hole about 5m deep which was quite productive. The best being about 1.8kg. Someone else nearby landed one which looked to be a little bigger.
