Hi guys,

I hope you are all doing well?

So I usually just take my gear and head to my nearest pond or dam for some good old bass fishing. I only now started to take bass fishing much more seriously and I was wondering when the best times are to catch bass. So my question is.


- When exactly do bass pre-spawn, spawn and post spawn?

- What are bass behavior during these times of the year, where to find them?

- What lures work best for pre-spawn, spawn and post spawn?


Your answers would be really helpful!

Sadly, the bulk of info out there is specific to the US. So temperatures, seasons and behavior are completely different. One needs to try and get info from SA sources.

I'd like to know how the hell to catch the bigger fish during midsummer. I'm struggling at the moment catching the biggies.

There is a local bass forum that I keep meaning to sign up for but haven't found the time... Maybe I'll go do that now. :)

The lures my pro mate catches lunkers on are almost a foot long (some longer).. haha Cost an absulute fortune those lures but they get him his fish..Big rats and rubber swimbaits..Match the hatch, in the mountains the 12inch trout gets em, in the urban settings the big rat nails them. "Our" pet bass in my neighbors dam is now over 4kg, caught him a few times, last time was a football jig and a 4in pitboss trailer with a big hook. Time before that was on a white bread deegee for a carp! Last week he/she robbed my mate of dinner when he had a decent plate sized kurper on the line and swallowed that guy one shot and snapped his light kurper line..
We've heard of big bass nailing swimming boomslangs and others..
Big bass will swallow anything that fits in his mouth, which is pretty much anything that makes a substantial meal..You gotta figure out where they will be and feeding on what generally and then use a bait that will exclude smaller fish and its game on, like with any other big fish. Werner @ eddles gas in retreat cape town stocked their new tank with bass when they opened, after a week 10 had become 1. There was also drama in the shops with little girls screaming as bass smashed other bass haha so the lunker got freed again and it is now stocked with much more well behaved kurper..You'd be surprised at what a big bass will eat.

Thanks for the link. It looks like the answers are there.

The main reason I figured I would ask on the forum is because most of the US videos are a bit different to ours. Especially when the spawning period happens.

Looking at the URL you sent now for some of the answers.

That is also the reason I don't really like watching US videos other than techniques and lure info videos. Stuff like the season and best times to catch them are a bit different here in SA.

I also struggle to catch those big ones. Caught a decent size last week with a Zoom Speed Craw. First good catch in ages haha.

Spring, summer, winter, "fall", all opposite to southern hemisphere but a bass is a bass..underwater footage is really helpful no matter where it is shot..
