Prawn bait

Good afternoon all,

I would like to know which methods you guys use to preserve prawn. How long do you keep them alive etc.

Thanks, your advice always appreciated.

Tight lines

there are several methods, but one that works for me is follows:

collect some sea water in a 5lt container to use as replacemnet water when you are at home.

Place your prawn in a container and half fill with water so that the prawn swims around. Then place container in the fridge. the prawn goes into a semi-hibernation state because of the cold. Make sure that your temp on the fridge is not too cold (not freezing). all you do is replace the water twice a day. you can keep it live for 4 days.

cheers.

They die more easily from heat than from oxygen starvation. I keep them in water in a 20l cooler box and just add ice bricks from time to time. Replace water once a day. I've kept about 100 prawns alive like this for 5 days. Would have lasted longer, but we used them.

Important - if you see a dead prawn remove it immediately.

Use a cardboard box( beer case box) put a layer of newspaper down and dampen with water. Spread the prawns out on the damp news paper and the cover with another piece of damp newspaper.( take out all dead prawns as said in above post). Then place in the fridge!! Should keep for afew days!

I just wish the Missus understood the importance of fresh bait and allowed me to do this to "her" fridge. :(

The most important thing to do is first make sure all the prawns you have kept are alive no cripple or half prawns these will turn the water bad and kill the rest. Get yourself a flat crate and put 1/2 cm or water in it put your prawns in the container and change the water checking to remove any dead prawns. Keep changing the water but make sure the prawns are not covered completely so there bodies are partly out the water. You can start feeding them with fish flake or goldfish food and you can keep them as long as six weeks or more in your garage just change the water regularly and feed them. Just keep removing the dead ones. Tight lines check out the article I wrote in next months RSD magazine on fishing with pink prawn out from the 1 June 2012 8th avenue spar for those of you living in PE. I will list all the stores that carry the magazine around the country on the RASSPL web site I do a bait article once a month for them.

when we go fishing for a day or two.

cardboard or beer box or similar lined with good quality white paper (print er A4 works),newspaper will stain the prawn as the ink draws out of the paper.
then add fresh salt water to dampen the layer of paper. add prawns. place the box with prawns on top of two ice packs inside your cooler box. last long stays fresh and crisp!!!
