Hi,

I'm going to Durban this weekend 23/04/2010 and my father inlaw booked us in Port Edward for 3 days. What species can I target on dropshot.I don't know the name of the resort but according to him it is few minutes walk from Splash Rock.I have a mixture of dropshot rubbers, poppers, spoons and Rapalas.

Thanks,

Vernon.

Speak to Terry at Tacklenet in Port Edward, can't miss him, he's the only fishing shop in Port Edward.

Terry always has good advice and know's whats going on in the surrounding area.

I was in Port Edward about 4 weeks ago and the fishing was pretty slow. Went to Splash rock every morning and got to know two of the locals there who fish every day.

One thing about splash rock though is that you have to be able to gooi it a bit - the water in front of it is very deep but there is a large break just in front which pounds into the rocks, hence the name.

On the first evening I got there I made an almighty ballsup. When I got to the rock there was a school of baitfish about the size of a tennis court going crazy and being chased. Rushed to get the trace off and a plug on and in a moment of madness managed to get the worst crows nest I have ever had trying to cast out to them. Lots of fun!

As for the species on offer - Splash Rock is one of very few places that you could catch just about anything. Guys have caught shad, kob, GTs, and even the occasional couta and dorado off there.

Good luck and enjoy....

To start out let me just say i havent fished port edward so im taking a flyer. If there are shad around try berkley jerkshad or minnow. I have caught shad in lesiure bay on gulp green 4"minnow. Im sure it doesnt have to be the expensive stuff, but i was a sucker. But there were fish around at the time! Good old spoon also a good bet. It is still early in the year tho for shad etc. Good luck - whatever you decide and tell us how it goes. Cheers...

There are lots of pretty lekker littel estuaries along the KZN SOuth Coast which can deliver awesome fishing if the ocean is on its head... Upper reaches of the Umtumvuna ( The Pont ) can produce perch, Rockies etc if you have a boat/kick boat/kayak...

Alternatively check out Mpenjati, if you don't have access to a craft of some kind... the mouth produces plenty wave garrick and small kingies, and the estuary holds some good rockies and the odd small Kingy and Springer...

Mzamba other side the WIld Coast Casino is an awesome estuary, and holds some amazing fish.... worth checking out if you can get access.

One problem with these areas, is SAFETY.... you need to be aware that fishing some of these estuaries on your own is a definte no go... its a damn shame... I grew up on that coast, and my old man would drop us off in teh morning and pick us up at sunset at these places when we were 12 years old with no second thought about safety.... never an issue...
Nowadays its a different story, so please be aware.... No fish is worth getting yourself into a situation where you have to defend yourself from some stupid bugger who wants to knife you for your cell phone or the 20 bucks in your wallet...

Hi,

The sea was very rough for the days I was at Port Edward but managed to fish the Umtamvuna river system and caught a few kingies, blacktails and some "silver fish with  black stripes" don't know the specie. While i was fishing the river from the surf side the complex management from the resort directly on the beach confronted us and advised us that the river was owned by them and we are not allowed to fish there as it is private property. Is this true?
