For what it's worth, in my opinion 1cm. Just off  the bottom, I know that some guys in the UK go higher, but I wouldn't.

My 1c.

I generally only pop up when fishing in soft silt or short grass and then the height I pop up depends on the depth of the silt or height of the grass, mostly I wouldnt go more than 5cm but have popped up as high as 30cm before with success.

Hannes I wouldnt say anything higher than 5m is a zig rig. Ive had success on a chod rig up to 25cm and then also I like to make combi links of about 7cm silkworm and pin it at the joint with the fluorocarbon.

The length all depends on the venue for me. but as arule I would go for 5-7cm and work from there.

I think another good question would be are you fishing popups or artificial baits on your pop-up rigs. I love a bright coloured artificial 15mm when fishing a chod.

I read a very interesting article awhile back about pop-ups. The author believes that because most big carp are deep-bodied (rugby ball shaped), it would be easier for them to suck in a pop-up that is presented about 15-20cm off the bottom (meaning that the fish will be in its normal "upright" position when approaching the pop-up) than it would be for the carp to have to tilt its body 45 degrees first to eat the bait off the bottom....

I gotta be honest I havent used anything popped up higher than 5cm, so wonder how true the above is... I have heard of some guys fishing 15cm off the bottom to take advantage of the above theory and they got some pretty big carp...interesting...
