Hey Guys

I need help with my boat!!!

Took it out for its maiden ride after doing a complete over hall and just could not get it on the plain its a 16 ft salmon catcher and has got a 40hp 3 cylinder yamaha on the back. The motor has got hydro foils on Could that be a reason ? I think that the motor should be more than strong enough to push the boat. I also had to lift the motor cause its a short shaft.

Please can someone help

Thanks

Is the motors throttle opening up all the way?
Is the prop in good condition and the standard prop for the motor?
How much weight are you carrying on the boat?
Where is the most weight positioned? Forward, middle or back ...
A pic or two of the boat, motor and transom could help.

Dont laugh, did you put your hull's drain plugs in? Happen to me ones at Swartkops, boat was so heavy could not plane. Went back to the slipway, onto the trailer and the whole Victoria Falls came running out of the hull. Put the plugs back in and sorted. Also remember to open the breather nut on your petrol tank.

Go through the complete hull and the area at the transom, check for cracks/holes. When you get off the water again, take the drain plugs out and check how much water is coming from the hull. A hull with some water can make a huge difference.

There was once a story like this about an American with no idea...............he forgot to take his new boat off the trailer, and also couldnt understand why the boat would not plane, until someone showe dhim that the trailer is supposed to stay attached to the bakkie !!

I am looking into the prop pitch I think it may be that. The boat was as dry when i took it out as when I put it in . I bought the boat and the transem was cut so low the motor was catching and could not turn. I heard that your 2nd water line from the bottom of your motor must be inline with the bottom of your hull?
Thanks for the advise Guys I will be sending pics.

Just a stupid question: Why would you lift the motor if its a short shaft!

Sorry for silly question!

If all general causes have been checked, then it seems like the height of the transom and the length of the motor dont match. The planing fins of the motor(just above the prop)should be in line with the keel of the boat at the back.
Hope this helps.
