hey guys, i have just joined this forum after hearing about it and after reading a few post i decided 2 join.

but the reason why i am really posting is to ask a questions that has been asked a lot. i am currently investing in the Daiwa Sealine SH Model SL50SHK reel
(roung about R900-R1000 bucks) and will be getting it in a weeks time. the big question is, what SURF rod can i buy (preferrably around 14ft) that is graphite and is not to expensive bur good value for money. one guy at al cocks fishing tackle in PE suggested that i take a G Loomis rod but i cant seem to remeber the name, unfortunately. otherwise i was opting to go for the assassin beachmaster.

i would really apreciate it if you guys could get back at me as soon as possible

Suburban Tackle this week quoted me R795 on the Daiwa SL50SHK. I settled on a Torium 30 for R1115 and Shimano Exage 1468A for R945 from Fishing spwcialist.

I first bought the Elbe Waverunner 2 weeks ago for R590, caught a 5kg Cob on it 2 days later, nothing wrong with it. I am however going to Mazeppa bay next week for 2 weeks and would also like to target non-eds. I made an informed decision based on the opinions/experience of sealine members postings to get myself the exage and torium 30 so as to have a good dual purpose rod and reel as well. Do a search on sealine for the Elbe Waverunner and you will find some very constructive replies.

hi Philip depending on whether you want to just target edibles, then the sl50 will be okay. it casts beautifully.

i am however a shimano fan, and would choose the Shimano Speedmaster over the sl50.
if u want to target non eds as well, then get a reel that can take serious line, like Shimano Torium 30, Daiwa Saltist, or Saltiga Range.

Hi Phillip,

Does the rod have to be a 3 piece? If not, the Waft Highlander HMG range is a brilliant buy, if you can stretch your budget to R1500, you can get the Waft Hammerhead HMG, which will easily cast a 10oz sinker.

They're also very light, strong as hell and well finished, so you won't have to worry about about the rod breaking etc.

The SL50 is a brilliant reel! I have one and love it, in fact more than my Saltist, I seem to be able to cast better with it than the Saltist, however if you get into a big shark/ray, you're going to battle to stop it with the SL50.

The SL50 should retail at around R800, anything more and you're getting ripped. The Elbe is also a brilliant rod for the price, I also have one of those, with no gripes at all, good value for money.

phillip, assassin beachmaster with trigger winch with sealine sl50shk all the way. it is the exact combination i use. it is such a wicked outfit and you can pull anything from a bronzie to a stumpie with it. throw some braid on and you can tackle anything. i do agree though that if you haven't bought the reel yet and can stretch another couple of bucks try get a torium. i got the sealine at such a ridiculously good price that i couldn't say no. honestly the beachmaster is an excellent rod, i have converted an all time purglass angler over to the beachmaster as well after he fished with my stick. that outfit casts like a dream, with .55 line and a 1mm leader you can comfortably throw over 100m (measured 104m and close to 120m with a line meter bru, not thumbsucking the distance)

The Waft Highlander series is sold by Western Accessories, they have a branch in CT and will post/courier it to you should you decide to go for it.

if some of you guys are wanting to sell a rod i would really be interrested or give me more info on the waft rods (i feel like a real biginner, cause i know alot about fishing but it looks like i actuallly know nothing)

Passing through PE on way to Mazeppa next Friday at about 11:00, stopping at Greg Gardner Enterprises to buy a Safari Chiller or 2. Would be more than prepared to bring up tackle if needed/bought in Cape Town and meet you there.

the spool size is standard. cost is around R1150 or thereabouts and you can probably get around 350m of braid and top it up with 200m of .55 mono (no different to the sealine). braid you're probably looking at around R1.70 or so per metre of whiplash. i wont fuel up the torium/trinidad debate but i have heard from guys who are experienced and who i absolutely trust that the torium is on an equal footing with the trinidad (some say it's actually better). one question to ask yourself is how good a caster are you? the one benfit of the sl50shk is that it comes with an amazing anti-backlash system. in the box you'll get two addtional collars that you have to fit yourself but honestly a ten year old could do it. it is so easy to set the cast control correctly it's a joke and then you can gooi as hard as you possibly can and it just sails off with no recoil and no overwinds. i honestly cannot remember when last i had an overwind with my reel. the drag system is also incredible. i did battle for just over 2 hours with a huge spearnose a while back and pulled with everything i had (and i'm 106kilos) and when i opened up the reel it looked brand spanking new. i wade with it, have had it covered in sand at tugela and it still purrs like a kitty cat. if you are on a budget and want to spool up with braid too, then get a shimano 20/40 for around R650. they are bulletproof and are absolutely fantastic reels capable of handling pretty much anything out there. the guys that fish the reefs in CT swear by them. my 20/40 is like a tank. it spends 3 or 4 hours totally submereged when on the reefs and still wont give you a day of trouble...

Hi Phillip,

The Wafts are made at the Blue Marlin factory using HMG mixed with another material, which is WA's own 'secret' recipe. All the guides/reelseat are Fuji as well, attesting to the quality of the rod.

They are very light, as mentioned, which is why I bought both of mine, the casting action is very good, you should have no hassel casting with the Waft. Rather spend a little extra on the rod, that way you won't have to buy another one for a while. Give Abdul Azziz a call at WA on (011) 660-5705, he will be able to give you more info on the Waft Highlander range.

As for reels, I am not biased towards either Shimano/Daiwa and own both brands of reels and am happy with both. The SL50 is a bloody brilliant reel for first time multiplier users, user friendly and easy to cast with. But if the 20/40 fits your budget better, go for that.

Agreed on the braid though, that is a must. You should be able to pick up 600m of Kingfisher 45-50lb braid for around R420.
