Please could someone assist me, I was clearing out my garage and came accross all my old expired flares, where can I take them for disposal ??

Don't know of a safe disposal spot but down here in Simon's Town the guys keep them till NewYear's Eve and let them off during the midnight festivities. I think the local Yacht Club normally gets a permit to set off fireworks.

Change the dates and use for the next nine years!!
I tried taking them to SAPS (who should take them) and the idiot told me to take them to the dump!!

I took one to the local SAP station and the constable didnt know what it was let alone what to do with it, so I politely said thanks turned around and walked out shaking my head.

Good question CLS, i've sent a few PM's to some of the more senior off shore anglers with no response to this question as well.

I wanted to know if it was legal to keep the expired flares on board with your current flare kit as back ups to your unexpired flare kit. In that you'd use the expired flares before utilizing your unexpired kit.

Also what dangers are involved with hanging onto expired flare kits

I think the best is to contact the local Fire Dept. They also control these things, fireworks ect. Try them, maybe they will be more helpfull than our modern SAP

Hey guys. In Cape Town you can take them to Viking Lifesaving Equipment. Otherwise the fire department.

We used to use them in the fire department for starting training fires and smoke entry at Epping, drop them off there or take them to Viking as mentioned above, sure they will be glad to have them.

I know Redwatch and a few others also do marine typr fire training, maybe try them as well?

Please do not use old flares, a girl was nearly killed on New Years a few years back at Langebaan due to an old flare back firing, an instructor lost his fingers the flare exploded when giving a demonstration with an expired flare. I nearly set the veld alight shooting off an old flare.

Hand them in at the shop where you buy your flares

I will never use expired flares, I have been in contact with the local fire dept, they put me onto the safety / explosive dept who will let me know what to do. According to them they are classed as an explosive and have to be declared and signed in. Taking them to the SAP they say is a no no. What do all the skiboaters do with there expired flares ???. Are there any suppliers out there who could assist.

I contacted a Capt. Gunter Nicholas from the explosives dept. yesterday.He came to my house today and collected all the expired flares without a problem. He can be contacted on 0795295074. He did mention that the supplier should take your old flares when you purchase new, then they hand them over.

Best bet is to just hand them in to the dealer where purchasing your new ones and they should be helpful enough to sort it out.
