Platties, legal or not

I started looking for platties about 3 months ago, I was given numbers to phone but if the seller did not know you he always said he had no stock. It was all under-cover for a while with meeting places where platties for cash were exchanged. I expected the "plattie police" to jump out of the bushes at any minute. Fishing shops say that because of the ban the platties are now endangered as people stopped breeding them for retail. How true this is I don't know but it sounds that there could be some truth in this.

Does anybody know what the fine is? Has anyone ever been fined? Are the "plattie police" doing their jobs? lol

Hi Steve

Getting hold of Platties can be quite difficult these days and hence no longer use them.

I used to own a fishing shop in Mercury street in Benoni and was able to get stock on a weekly basis.

Whilst i had them we never used to have to hide them we had them in a glass fish tank in the shop where customers could choose there own. 

I moved from the shop in 2011 and i think they still carried on selling but as of today i am not sure.

Definitley not endangered! Every puddle, ditch, small stream and dam is full of them. Only the bunny huggers that dont like seeing them used as bait. Strange as the Vaal River has plenty of platties in it and the barbel eat them all the time. You can buy them and use them as bait, I think the issue more goes around having licenses to sell them being required. What's next, they gonna stop us using earth worms or crabs as bait as well.

Haha its like smoking skelm. Its more fun when u not allowed to.

People realy have gone under the tables with platties and righfully so. I wonder who the chops were that made them ilegal in the first place. If something gets banned people will still manage a way to get them but not breed them and in my opinion that will put them in danger much like the perlemoen.
