Hey guys, i took a drive to grunter gulley (durban harbour) this afternoon after campus, to do some dropshotting. I was using a 3inch unscented minnow, and on about the forth retrieve i was tight, i brough the fish up to the surface about 3m away, thats wen the hook came loose, it lookd to as if it was a pick handle baracuda of around 2kg, just wanted 2 know if these fish have been caught in the harbour before, and if not what other fish could it have been?

I am actually glad to hear that you had some luck on dropshot. Grunter Gully, you mean silt canal right? (elcon cranes gully). i usually fish further down on my boat. its tons of fun when fish a biting!
about your fish....it could be, lots of different species are surfacing around the harbour, if not that then salmon perhaps?

Correct, it probably was a pick handle barracuda-Sphyraena Jello.
They are quite abundant in the summer months, especially around the yacht mole and on the drop offs of the sand banks. Good fun to catch and they eat almost anything, spoon, drop shot and my personal fave, the floating minnow.
Grunter gully is quite a good spot when the authorities don't hassle you...have landed mullet, sea pike, kingies, sand gurnard, needle scaled queen fish and torpedo fish there.

I'd like to see where you go dropshotting and what you use.
As I've tried dropshotting in the harbour.....but to no avail.

Hey Brusher well done man! What size was ur sea pike?, n could u please describe were about in the gully u dropshot, slow or fast retrieval n how heavy ur lead was on what size hook???.. try yacht mole aswell at the end of the cracked up peer facing towards the Bluff.. Had success there in sea pike, a 4kg kingie but most of the time small 1's with a 5" jnr shad with 1/4 ounce lead hook.Also try putting a float stoppin it with a swivel with 1mm f/c leader about 50-70cm long with a live bait.. cot plenty springer n about 3 pickhead barracuda usin that trace on a drop shot also hooked a huge cuda that snapped my line while tryna pick it (i know thats a stupid thing to do but i was too scared to put my hands near that thing). Howsit nolze, shot the tips, the fish was about 50cm lng, i was fishing directly across the road from where the elcon cranes park. Used a 1/4 ounce jig head with 20lb flouro leader, there were tons of small fish(minnows) in the shallows, the big fish were probably feeding on them. The only problem with that spot is the cops always turn up when the fish are biting.
