Although I hear what you're saying it's still a matter of personal choice and opinion.

I for one prefer Daiwa and Shimano grinders, in the "cheapies" I prefer Daiwa and in the more expensive I prefer Shimano.
Alot of people don't agree with me, and exactly the same story with rods.

Rather tell us more about what you want to do and then we can advise based on that

To Dropshot you don't need top of the range stuff or the most expensive stuff... My dropshot outfit consists of a no name 6 foot rod and daiwa crossfire 4000... And thats caught me plenty of good fish! And Ive never once had a problem...

I also only used Shimano, but when my rod and reel got stolen out the back of my bakkie down South Coast way this past week i was forced to get a new set-up. They only had Daiwa in the well priced bracket so reluctantly i bought the Exceler rod 4-20g and the exceler reel 3500.

I was pleasently suprised at how good the set-up was and casted 1/8 jigheads with cammoworm with the greatest of ease.

So it's Shimano or Daiwa Just as Ryan said.

rods :
berkley cherry (cheap, very light, feels great)
loomis (expensive, good weight, nice feel)
shimano (cheap, good all round)
daiwa (average, i don't like them)
sensation (expensive, very nice)

reels :
daiwa (cheap, good beginner, great reels)
shimano (expensive)
abu (expensive, not as popular as ESA make them to be)

line :
Fireline 6lb or 8lb MAX (14lb seems a good choice but its not, too heavy, too thick) - expensive but the best

Suffix 8lb - cheap, have some fun, very thin! tangles easily but great fun!

Kingfisher braid - STAY AWAY or RUNNNNNNNN if the salesman suggest it, rubbish braid, you rather put mono!

anything will work just depends how well you use it!

Our grandfathers caught monster size fish on bamboo sticks and hand line! :)

Here is some of the stuff that I have and use in various conditions, conditions dictate which I will use, I'm only mentioning some of the stuff that I have.

Unfortunately the only "original recipes" I believe in is Chutney and maybe Whiskey...
I'm not brand loyal, never have and never will be, I use what I believe offers me the best value for money and suit the conditions that I fish in.

Rods
6.6ft Berkley CherryWood 2pc Rod (lure 1/8 - 5/8oz) (about R 300)
7ft Elbe Interceptor 2pc Rod (lure up to 1oz) (About R 300)
7ft Elbe Interceptor 1pc Rod (lure up to 1oz) (About R 300)
8ft Sensation Passion Stick 2pc Rod (lure 1/4 to 1.5oz)(About R 500)
8ft Daiwa Exceller 2pc Rod (lure 14g to 56g) (About R 800)
8ft Elbe Estuary Pro 2pc Rod (lure 20g to 40g) (About R 180)
9ft Berkley Air 2pc Rod (lure up to 3oz MAX) (About R 1400)

Reels
Shimano Alivio 2000 Grinder (About R 200)
Daiwa Regal 2500 Grinder (About R 350)
Daiwa Exceller Plus 3000 Grinder (About R 1000)
Shimano Corvalus CV300 Multiplier (About R 800 I think)
Daiwa Oceano 4500J Grinder (About R 1300)
Shimano Stradic 8000 Grinder (About R 2000)
and then another few grinders that I don't use often, all loaded with between 4kg IFGA line to 8kg mono line

Line (can't remember the costs)
Berkley Fireline 6lb - White - 125yds
Berkley Fireline 8lb - Yellow - 300yds
Berkley Fireline 10lb - Pienk - 300yds
Berkley Fireline 30lb - Black - 300yds
Mustad Braid 30lb - Yellow - 300yds
PowerPro Braid 50lb - Green - 300yds
4lb IGFA Kingfisher Line

Now the pairing of them

6.6ft Berkley CherryWood 2pc Rod (lure 1/8 - 5/8oz)
Daiwa Regal 2500 Grinder
Berkley Fireline 6lb - White
4lb IGFA Kingfisher Line

7ft Elbe Interceptor 2pc Rod (lure up to 1oz)
Daiwa Exceller Plus 3000 Grinder
Berkley Fireline 8lb - Yellow
Berkley Fireline 10lb - Pienk

7ft Elbe Interceptor 1pc Rod (lure up to 1oz)
Shimano Corvalus CV300 Multiplier
4lb IGFA Kingfisher Line

8ft Sensation Passion Stick 2pc Rod (lure 1/4 to 1.5oz)
use either
Daiwa Exceller Plus 3000 Grinder
Berkley Fireline 8lb - Yellow
Berkley Fireline 10lb - Pienk
or
Daiwa Oceano 4500J Grinder
Mustad Braid 30lb - Yellow

8ft Daiwa Exceller 2pc Rod (lure 14g to 56g)
Berkley Fireline 8lb - Yellow
Berkley Fireline 10lb - Pienk
or
Daiwa Oceano 4500J Grinder
Mustad Braid 30lb - Yellow

8ft Elbe Estuary Pro 2pc Rod (lure 20g to 40g)
Shimano Alivio 2000 Grinder
4lb IGFA Kingfisher Line

9ft Berkley Air 2pc Rod (lure up to 3oz MAX)
Daiwa Oceano 4500J Grinder
Mustad Braid 30lb - Yellow
or
Shimano Stradic 8000 Grinder
Berkley Fireline 30lb - Black
PowerPro Braid 50lb - Green

Now based on this, note that I don't carry all these rods with me when going fishing, I use different setups based on conditions and location

from the rocks
I will take atleast the 6.6rod and then choose between the 8ft of the 9ft depending on where I'm going

from the Surf
I'll take the 7ft and the 9ft

from the boat in the river
I'll take the 6.6ft, 7ft (both) and the 3 8ft rods with various reels, but for sport would mostly use 4kg igfa line

from the boat at sea
I'll take 1x7ft rod, 1x8ft rod and the 9ft rod
and use the Exceller Plus, the Oceano 4500 and the Stradic 8000

The rods cost anything from R 150 up to about R 1400
The reels cost anything from R 250 up to about R 2000
Line, well there you know

In most cases I prefer to not use mono for backing on my grinders, I prefer to load spool with either braid all the way or mono all the way, the only exception is the Regal which has 4kg Mono as backing (on the one spool) and then 125yds of Fireline as topshot, but this is a very very light setup not meant for big fish that would take that much line.

For a person doing both rock and surf on a not so serious note I would recommend the following :

One outfit
Elbe 7ft rod with either Daiwa Exceller 3000 or Daiwa Regal 2500
This outfit can handle a wide range of lure weights from 1/8 up to 1oz

Two Outfits
6.6ft Rod with Regal 2500
8ft (Passion stick or Exceller Rod) with Exceller 3000
The light outfit is great for fish up to 3kg and lighter lures, especially in the rivers and Gullies
The heavier outfit is great for Heavier lures and longer casts in the surf, and if you do your work can handle fish up to and over the 10kg mark with ease.

For the fanatic
6.6ft Rod with Regal 2500
8ft rod with Exceller 3000
9ft rod ith Oceano 4500 or Stradic 8000
here you have everything you could possibly need to take on from .5kg fish right up to the monsters of the rocks and surf !

It depends on many things including your budget, how serious you are about fishing and most important, YOUR NEEDS.

Big pleasure

there is a difference between the Opus Bull and the Oceano

I haven't heard or experienced anything bad with the Oceano, on the Bull (which I don't have) I have heard a few bad things ...

if I may

I would strongly recommend the following rods :

7ft Elbe Interceptor 2pc Rod (lure up to 1oz) (About R 300)
8ft Sensation Passion Stick 2pc Rod (lure 1/4 to 1.5oz)(About R 500)
9ft Berkley Air 2pc Rod (lure up to 3oz MAX) (About R 1400)

then for sharkies
Look no further than the Loomis and Franklin Sharkey
they are very cheap for WHAT YOU GET
I bought myself the HMG version and love the rod
The original Sharkey rods have caught lots and lots of monster sharks and I've never heard anything bad said about them

Normal one goes for about R 1100 and the HMG for about R 1500, not on the dot prices, but a good estimate
connect a Trini 30 to it and you ready FOR BIG ACTION.

and as for bait fishing, although my rods listed in the first long post are mostly used for lures from dropshot to rapalas to spoons and every other lure imaginable I have at times gone old school and used with with sinker and bait, especially the 8ft and 9ft rod.

I like 2 and 3pc rods, cause then I can fit them all in one bag and that way can carry 4 rods with me with relative ease.
