The first comprehensive review of poaching of South Africa's marine resources has found that the illegal abalone (perlemoen) trade conservatively cost the country about R2-billion in 2007 - and the position has become significantly worse since then.
This was revealed at a seminar to discuss the 2007 report into so-called IUU (illegal, un-regulated and unreported) fishing, organised by the Institute for Security Studies, which also commissioned the report.
