Hi 2 all...just returned from the transkei, conditions wernt 2 gud...2 big fish lost on dropshot, the 1st was in the estuary, using a piece of berkly bloodworm, hooked the bugger but as soon as he turned to run, the hook came off...2nd was on the surf, out going tide, using a berkly rainbow trout, i hooked the sucker, he ran,my drag went screeming off..brought him close eventually, but then lost him! Frustrating...does the fear of facing the dissapointment of loosing a big fish often discourage u 4rm picking up that dropshot rod 4 another cast?

I'm new to dropshot so I can't comment on percentage but last weekend I was fishing for Kob with a 5" bandit jerk shad on a Storm 1/2oz joghead with 4/0 hook. Twice I felt a pick-up and set the hook solidly had the fish on for a few seconds and then off. A little late on an 11cm Storm swimshad I had a pick-up and solidly hooked my first kob(55cm) on dropshot. I suspect that sometimes if the fish swallows the whole lure when you strike the lead head part of the lure is against his closed mouth rather the the hook point. That's just fishing though, I have lost fish on every kind of lure and bait. I have missed many Kob on livebait so missing a few on dropshot doesn't worry me that much. I beleive that once you master dropshot it will offer a very good ratio of fish landed.
With bass fishing the soft plastic baits are not only the most successful but you also loose very few fish.

I also lost a number of fish on dropshot.

I think one of the the problem lies with hooking up the plastic, maybe the hook does not protrude enough so when the fish takes and you strike and try and set the hook, it pops out or does not set very well so while reeling in you lose the fish.

another problem is that maybe the fish that are attacking the lure are too small to get grip of it. I was thinking of ways to get a smaller hook at the rear of the lure to increase my chances. but how?

my theories, lol!

Boet you dont just drop fish on dropshot you drop them with any tackle PERIOD! If a fish takes youre plastic and takes drag that means it was a sollid hook up ,but it might just be in the lip,and tears out ,these things happen trying to get a second hook at the back will help ,but remember every trace I make and fish with has 2 hooks and I still drop pick ups and sollid hook ups. I caught 19 kob today(09-05-09) with 2 clients and lost about 8 or more that is just fishing. I have caught some nice big kob on dropshot but allso lost a lot, the thing is when you put youre plastic on the hook make sure it ends up PROUD, do not push youre plastic all the way in ,but just make sure the hook piont pops out half way this will make the hook piont protrude more . Hope it all makes sence.
